What do you know about the British armed forces?

I'll be working in the MoD soon (as a placement) and I want to have a working knowledge of various bits and pieces before I start.
>>
>>34909292
That anything you think is gay know will feel really good in a couple years.
>>
>>34909292
Unfortunately everything.
>>

I served with Australians but not Brits. As an American I basically consider you the same thing, but you probably don't.
>>
>>34909292
You guys can boil kettles in your tanks, I think that's really neat.
>>
>>34909472
JPA sucks. Pension sucks if you're army. We're all fucked so much.

The army is so broke they can't afford to fix or insure certain site.

On the plus side we're getting power armour
>>
>>34909485
>power armour

>>
>>34909490
Nothing, just an inside joke. Forget you ever read it.
>>
Are ranks the same for each wing of the forces? I'm going to be in a joint forces base so it'll be army, navy, and RAF.
>>
>>34909292

>and I want to have a working knowledge of various bits and pieces before I start.

Then go ask something OTHER than 4chan. Try ARRSE, UKDF or Think Defence.

And how does that work exactly? Do you have SC or DV?

No, army has staff sergeants, RAf has flight sergeants.

Some regiments don't even have the same ranks.
Lancer, trooper, Gunner, guardsman, ranger, sapper rifleman, fusaliers...

Don't get me started on Household cavalry's corporal of horse ect...

>>34909506
>ARRSE
/k/ has nothing on arrse.

Funnily enough bloke on the range started his youtube career doing shit just for ARRSE
>>
>>34909524
Is that next test held next to the indoor mortar range and the motorcycle license testing centre?
>>
>>34909526
Christ this rank shit is going to confuse the fuck out of me. All my knowledge of the military up until now is films and videogames.

>>34909515
I'm not going into detail, but suffice it to say it's a departmental placement.
>>
>>34909531
Yeah right beside the underground parachute test depot and the scoffhouse that serves caviar
>>
>>34909537
I know theres biochem students that can get a placement at Porton Down, but fair one, enjoy being a brew bitch.
>>
>>34909292
>I'll be working in the MoD soon

Oh goodie, yet another pen pusher who will inevitably fuck everyone over

Don't forget to disband one of the oldest infantry battalions in the Army whilst you're at it.

Also the RAF desperately needs more funding, forget about the Army, we'll make do with with we've got, that is, knee and back injuries

Don't forget to change the pam so that Infanteers can now carry even more weight because doing advance to contact whilst carrying a 50kg bergen and 25kg of CEFO gear just isn't quite hard enough

Thanks again oh glorious benevolent overlord
>>
>>34909543
Well I'll not say what it is exactly but it's a civil service thing.
>>
>>34909292
Any member of the Parachute Regiment under the rank of sergeant WILL try and pick a fight with anything when drunk.
I once saw one give himself concussion by repeatedly headbutting a postbox to "teach it to not get in his way".

I've got one advantage in that I worked in the merchant navy for about five years, so I at least have some operational naval knowledge, even if it's on the civilian side.

So I know about the electricity bill at the end of a contract. Or maybe that's not done in the RN.

>>34909564
It's not whitehall based at least. It's an operational base. I tried to work out what the fuck it's about and found this shit as part of its roles, which is utterly baffling:

>Support to urgent operational requirement (UOR) and urgent operational tasking (UOT) e.g. by working with the UOR/UOT centre of ISS to ensure Eng Ops/DSG/SAI and other elements of the ISP deliver the best support

fuck me mate he beasted our entire platoon once because we came off exercise straight into PT and he's giving it all the "WHY THE FUCK IS YOUR SHIRT NOT IRONED"

>>34909706

>>34909716
Yeah he was a right cunt, on tabs he would fucking peg it away up a hill, we would all run after him but get strung out. Id always manage to stay at the front, avoiding the PTIs screaming 'close those fucking gaps, I could park a Challenger in there', but then that little irish prick would have a water break and chew us out for being 'jack cunts making it harder on the lads at the back'. So if you dont keep up youre a lazy cunt, and if you do keep up youre a jack cunt. No winning.
>>
>>34909741
>tfw tallest in the platoon so if I went to the front I'd get called a jack cunt because "you've got long legs you can keep up, get to the fucking back"

And if I stay at the back I'm always getting strikes because apparently it's my fucking fault that the next 10 people in front of me can't fucking tab and create a massive gap

Fucking hated Tabbing because of that
>>
so what regiments we got here?
4MI here.
>>
>>34909752
Yeah the thing that fucks me off is how its always 'weakest to the front, strongest at the back', but then the weak ones at the front slow down and make gaps, so the strong ones yo-yo back up to the front just in time for the next water break and 'weakest front, strongest back'. Over the course of a 6 miler id yo-yo up to the front at least 3-4 times because some cunts cant tab to save their lives

They seemed to be very keen to learn things and were much better at identifying who needed to go where, in terms of career. Anyone capable would get fired up the promotion ladder. This had its downsides, but for the most part it seemed to work well.

Loads of dead wood and people that were, in my view, unsuitable for any sort of armed service.

Thats against regs, you have to fly a minimum of 300 hours annually to retain flight status. And you can't just up and quit

So i'm calling BS

If you fly less than 300 then you're getting a fucking mountain of paperwork and retraining.

Their chow sucks. Seriously it's bad. I think I was at Camp Warehouse a few times in Kabul where the Brits were . Cool dudes but their chow.....garbage. Like who the fuck puts corn on their already shit tier pizza...
>>
>>34911822
No brits were based at camp warehouse, all british forces in kabul operated out of the embassy Compound.

Only exception was M&T teams but they were typically only section, platoon strength at most. Not enough to warrant independent logistics and cooks.
>>
>>34911882
Mg bad then. I've been to so many posts I've forgotten most if the names warehouse may have been a French post. Compound sounds familiar but idk... whatever place it was there ead a lounge with a small shop wifh some billiards and stuff. Some usual haji shops outside, etc. Later in my tour the Brits also took over Qarga or Mazaree sharif. One of those two.

Anyone here know anything about being a Geographic Technician? I went in to talk to the recruiter and when I mentioned my interests and degree he got extremely excited about that role, really really wanted me to go for it, something about there not being many people applying for it because "anyone who is qualified doesnt want it because they think its boring."

I'm still weighing up whether I want to go in as an Officer or Enlisted.

>Another month later, letter back, medical deferment on two areas.
>Fuck that, i'm appealing
>Get an appointment with GP for supporting letter to go with my appeal (takes around 4 weeks between then and appointment, overbooked as shite)
>Get letter, send appeal off
>Couple of days later, get a letter saying the medical assessment centre have received it
>Three weeks later, get a response.
>Still deferred, however the thing I wasn't expecting to win an appeal on has been struck from the list of reasons for my deferment.
>Okay, try again.
>Arrange GP appointment (another four weeks)
>Get another letter covering the ground I missed like a tosser
>Send it off
>Wait two weeks, hear nothing
>Chase it up by phoning Army recruitment centre
>"Yeah they've received it, just not sent off a letter yet."
>LolOK
>Wait three weeks like before
>Nothing
>Chase it up again
>"Oh yeah it's been sent on to another place for processing, it'll be another six weeks from when it was sent."

Thats something really specialised mate, if you live anywhere near London theres a reserve barracks southwest of their so i'd recommend getting in touch with a member of staff there to organise a visit and ask some of the guys.

I knew someone who did it, after 2 years in he got release from duties to go to university.

Most of what he used to do was take rock, water, soil samples, shove long rods into the ground, and use laser measures.

Smart guy, he even had his own container for all the gear and kit he used to have.

I'd recommend reading some threads on arrse as its pretty specialised, if you join you can pose questions (royal engineer or sappers section) or they can probably put someone in touch who was or is in the role

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Geographic+Technician+site%3Awww.arrse.co.uk

>>34912406
A 4 chan user (recceman) nearly lost his eye in combat and had to have laser eye surgery in order to correct it
He nearly got medically discharged for unauthorised medical treatment that they put him on in the first place because they sent him to a private facility.

its fully issued to royal mercian, Anglian, PWRR, paras and according to an RAF loadmaster i'm in touch with the RAF regiment.

People say the helmet is good, but the vest is crap, the emergency release is pulled once as a prank and it will never be the same again. The spine seems to be only good for Route marches and is useless for combat as it will prevent you from getting back up from prone without rolling onto your back first.

I've seen people use them as car jacks for landies though.
