Why did basically all early SMG's have their recoil tube end above the grip, even if they had a fixed wooden stock? Some of those older SMG's are pretty long but still have itty bitty barrels. Move everything but grip back a bit, get shorter gun or longer barrel with same length.
I Doubt its just completely on mechanical complexity of partially separating trigger and sear.

because then it would get in the way of where the web of your hand is supposed to sit on a grip? ever tried wrapping your hand around a bolt action rifle with the bolt open, because you can't. why they didn't just use a free standing pistol grip and moved it further up? a bunch of reasons really, the rationale for older submachine guns being fine the way they are is that pistols that originally shot the same ammunition had short barrels anyway so it'd work fine considering pistol powder burns well out of a short barrel.

Because they worked and were simple.
That's what's needed when you want to make a million of something. Simple to use, easy to manufacture.
When you start to get into the realms of >>34901329 you start whacking the complexity of the design way up to where the advantages in ergonomics are outweighed by the added complexity and cost of manufacture.
As is said in >>34900459 you *could* modify the Grease Gun, Sten etc, but they were designed to be insanely simple. Why complicate it?

Ease of manufacture, along with tradition. A lot of 1st and 2nd generation SMG's follow the MP18's general layout, which works pretty well.

The MP40 has a roughty 10" barrel. Same with the PPSH, Thompson, etc. You don't need a much longer barrel on an SMG than that, and many guns didn't.
I've handled an MP40 and a PPSH, and they're hardly long, unwieldy things. They worked just fine in their period.

Half of the ones made between the two World Wars in Yurop were all derived from each other, so there's that.
In fact, it's probably more like three quarters.
The role of the SMG wasn't well understood until people started reflecting on WW2, that's when the different designs really started to take off.
