Why do fragmentation grenades no longer have pineapple ridges?

Surely they make less fragmentation than the older style grenades.
>>
>>34882808

I believe some of them have cuts on the inside of the fragmentation shell
>>
>>34882808
They have an internal fragmentation liner that is scored similarly to how the outside used to be IIRC

Was there any reason for having the ridges inside rather than outside?

Terrifying.
>>

Smaller more shreddy fragments than large chunky frags that might not hit the dude.
>>
>>34882838

The old grenades were cast metal without a seperate frag liner

it was hoped the segmenting would help it fragment reliably as well as aid in grip
>>
>>34882830
Using cubes is really smart in this design. A cube provides the best size to weight ratio here and has shitty aerodynamics. Thus it is very effective close by but the shrapnel won't go insanely far.
>>
Do they allow grenades at outdoor ranges?

I have thrown grenades too, and assembled them. A liner of little cubes like in the message I was refering to is a really good design for a good defensive handgrenade that can be pushed into the offensive role given how little those cubes penetrate thicker walls at a distance.

>>
>>34883523
Grenades can be divided into defensive and offensive.

Defensive grenades are used for defense of fortifications etc. and thus allow the use of shrapnel.

Offensive grenades are use for attacking and breaching, where excessive shrapnel would be a liability.

Usually defensive grenades are shrapnel grenades and offensive grenades are pressure grenades. Both can be used for either purpose, though.
>>
>>34883587

+1

For instance the Stielhandgranate is generally considered an offensive grenade due to it's thin outer casing. It basically vaporizes producing little to no shrapnel but kills due to concussive force.

They are not going to stay cube shaped when the explosive detonates.
>>
>>34882969
Cube shaped shrapnel also produces much worse wounds than round one, IIRC that's why the russians preferred them for their shaped AP mines.

The casing, fool. You have SAAMI specs.

>different distances to camera in every pic
What difference does that make? You have scale to work with. Your only concern is the percentage of the casing that protrudes from the chamber of the pistol.

Wow Taku you really need to do your own fucking research, use your search bar! The interior is made of spun wire which is notched so that the wire creates about 1000 pieces of shrapnel
>>
>>34883066
Why is that? Were the ridges not enough?
>>
>>34887127
After the path of least resistance is found there is no need for the expanding gases to split open anywhere else. Placing pre-cut fragments held inside a solid shell ensures the number of frags flying.
>>
>>34887127
early(ish) metallurgy wasn't that good at reliably creating lots of small fragments during the explosion

At least you can frag. What are you?
>>
>>34882808
The Mk 2, like the Mk 1, was manufactured ofcast iron with a grooved surface divided into 40 knobs in 5 rows of 8 columns. This was to enhance fragmentation (in practice, it was found that the grooves did not enhance fragmentation as much as desired) and provide a better grip when handling and throwing the grenade.

Straight from Wikipedia.

Pineapple shape didn't do much. Internal fragmentation matrix is more effective.
>>
>>34883066
This more than anything else.
>>34887127
They were made of shitty cast iron and the external scoring was too shallow (IIRC) so once one point was blown through the shell it tended to split into a few large fragments. Newer ones are either prefragmented or have much better qc on the scoring, and internal scoring is better at fragmenting even after holes have been made.

When I was a teenager, a local surplus store was selling pineapple grenades with the striker intact and a hole about the size of a quarter on the bottom.

We found out a shotgun primer would arm it. We filled them with black powder and hammered in an engine freeze plug into the hole.
Then we screwed the handle and striker back into it very carefully. They worked really well. I still have the round pins.
>>
>>34882838
They work. It is not easy to achieve breaking of shell along ridges. Outside only ridges don't work. Inside could. Both are most reliable. pineapple grenades don't break along ridges, their fragments are much more smaller, though ridges help with fragmentation .

>>
>>34883067
relying on pressurizing a container is shitty, need to manufacture explosives and a reliable chemical fuse first.
>>
>>34882808
Grenades since WW1 have implemented internal score marks to achieve fragmentation. Any ridges on the outside was solely to provide a better grip. I don't know why they stopped adding the ridges but I suspect it has to do with the prevalence of gloves in armed forces.

No. Offensive grenades are less powerful and utilize blast rather than fragmentation to minimize the risk to the team assaulting a position. Defensive grenades can be more powerful and utilize fragmentation since of course they're being used from inside solid cover.

In any case this is more of a slavic thing, NATO and the like doesn't really make such differentiation. Preferring the one size fits all method.
