I used to make a big deal about it on my German 226 but then realized weapon mounted lights aren't really necessary unless it's an HD gun. And even at that, my go-to HD gun is a long gun with a light on it so it doesn't really matter.

You do have some laser options without the rail - there is one that replaces the guide rod and maybe CT grips.

Both of those are expensive, spend that money on ammo practicing with the sights, those fundamentals will apply to any handgun.

As someone who carries a 228 I say that getting a 229 without a rail is dumb. Don't do it unless it's a great deal you can't pass up. Otherwise hold out for the rail. If you go railless 9mm go 228 and win at life.
