Truth. The book was worlds better. The movie isn't even comparable. It looked good, but by no standards does it capture the feel of the book. Even if it's apples and oranges, I prefer Rum Diaries ever-so-slightly over Fear and Loathing, because of the way he just paints that fucked-up place. FaL was the American dream presented as a corpse, enbalmed by Vegas; RD is the American dream blowing up in peoples' faces in the worst way. Although one could argue they're also both about Americanism run amok. Not a literature professor, though, so that's just my superficial and subjective interpretations.

Having read a lot of his writngs, including the volumes of letters he wrote, and several biographies, I don't get a lot of what you guys are about here. He was basically a drunken bully and redneck gunklown who liked blowing up shit and whose politics were right off the left/right scale; in any case, not some soggy pink sozi. I'd hardly expect him to have much use for liberals as they were the ones who betrayed him when he ran for sheriff (they were frightened by the shaggy monsters he seemed to always attract wherever he went).
