What's the best magnification for a combat optic?
>variable power
Prism scopes are more durable so more suited for service.
2.2 - 3.6x
4x seems to be pretty standard for a "combat" sight

1x

depends where you live

Whatever best works for you.

Combat optic. Not OPs personal use.

the ACOG was heralded as the greatest battle implement for infantry since the Garand
I can only wonder how good a Garand with an ACOG could be

Preferred 1x in Iraq because most of it was MOUT and room clearing.
In Afghanistan 4x was the clear choice because we were mostly fighting in fields and mountains.

M1a scout?
I am a fan of 1-6 or 1-8 personally.

3.6-4x with a red-dot on top.

ACOG + RMR > Variable
>much lighter
>very robust and combat proven
>rmr is not even necessary since the ACOG is good enough for CQB
I used to be in the variable optica boat, but they are simply too cumbersome right now.

Depends on where you're fighting
>Urban environment
2x, 2.5x
>CQB
1x
>Fields, mountains, Hilly areas
4x
>heavily forested, jungles
2.5x, 3x
It's all about where you are, what you plan on doing, where you plan on going, and if you have the ability to swap out sights

exactly how I feel, plus having a 1x and a 4x in tandem allows you to switch on the spot instead of having to adjust your magnification on a variable.

1x sucks on a variable. It's not the same as a RDS. Rmr is not the same as a RDS either, it's so small and basically only good to about 75 yards. ACOG is seriously good enough for all purposes using BAC while being
>light as hell
>bright illumination
>no batteries
A variable is great on paper and I used to make fun of acog fags, but now I'm fully on the band wagon.
