From top to bottom:

Boker that my Great Uncle had; heavily used and buggered before I got it.

WW1 Mercator repro that my Dad got me about a decade ago.

Victorinox Woodsman (I think that's the model name) that I got in a trade 16 years ago from a good friend who stole it from his cousin; also damaged before I got it. Great saw on this one. I never camp without it due to the saw alone. The knife blade has a sliding side-lock.

Ontario RAT M1 that I bought online to replace the Kershaw that I lost in the woods. Works fine, but the finish could be better. Use/carry errday.

SOG Seal Pup that I bought on sale on a whim at a Big 5 store when I lived in California ~4 years ago. I do take it camping but it mostly stays in the truck.

Those Microtech OTF knives are pretty sweet. Just a fun action to work. I had a previous employer who got one from his wife for their anniversary....he abused the shit out of it by using it to pry open open paint cans, cut sandpaper strips, remove heavy staples from lumber shipments, etc.... I would cry on the inside a small amount every time I saw it open and unattended on his desk...inevitably sitting beside the most recent inappropriate task that he had in mind for it.

I'm from Texas so I dont know shot about knife laws in Canada but the big thing would be to check if you have laws against blades over a certain length and or that lock open. Also some places ban "gravity opened knives" which usually means butterfly knives but I have heard of assholes in court applying it to anything you can shake open with one hand without putting a finger on the blade/flipper/thumbstud if it doesn't have good retention. Other places will actually ban any knife that can be opened one handed but that's more common in like Europe.

Combat knives themselves are pretty Damm close to being a meme friendo. The ka-bar does a perfectly fine job of being a general purpose knife. My cutoff point for 100% pure made for murdering a guy knife is about $100. Everything after that is catering to people with too much money and the fantasy of cutting themselves out of a crashed Chinook somewhere in the middle of Bolivia. You want a legit combat knife that you're never gonna use without going broke? Get a Tatang. You want a knife that you aren't afraid to use which also doesnt make you look like and edgy faggot, get a ka-bar because it's Americana at this point

Kobun is a smaller, lighter knife, with about an inch less blade.(I have never used one.) Decently easier to conceal. The Glock is bulkier and more than double the weight. If you want concealability and like a lighter knife go with cold steel.

I like a heavier knife the Glock is a comfortable half pound in my hand.

That being said the Glock is only 30-40 dollars usually where I think the cold steel kobun is 60ish.

It depends on whether you're actually going to use. It's pretty reliable (the Spyderco wave being more reliable than Emerson's own wave IMO), but if you're not going to use it for its purpose, then it's just a bottle opener that might make your knife open up partially on accident.

Niether of those were me, faggot.

But speaking of the "American tanto" I sent my ZT 0620cf in cts204p for blade replacement. I broke the tip off a month or two back and had a friend give regrinding it a go. Didn't like it much and have been carrying the 0630cf in its' place. Found out Kai offers $10 blade replacement for Kershaws and $30 for ZT blades.

There's just not many good things about it.

It has great tip strength, but poor penetration abilities. The secondary edge on the tip can be good for certain tasks like scoring, but otherwise isn't good for many other utility tasks.

It's not awful, it just has an inflated reputation from COLD STEELâ„¢ and mall ninjas.

>>34866457
Pros
>good blade geometry
>great cutting ability due to efficient blade geometry

Cons
>handle has a tendency to swell, making it difficult to open or close
>only sturdy enough for light utility

>>34866597
Look into the Spyderco Salt line.

For all intents and purposes, it's rust-proof.

It won't get the classic red-brownish rust on it. There were a few incidents where it looked like it was rusting, but it was just metal dust or other cross-contaminants that settled on the blade and rusted, not the blade itself.

You can get it to corrode, but the chemicals harsh enough to do it would seriously fuck you up anyways.
>>
>>34866888
so i should get neither a coldsteel kobun or a glock 78?
>>
>>34857344
>https://twitter.com/HighestZen/status/896987633464647680

what brand is that?
>>
>>34866934
They're different knives with different purposes.
Both are lower end knives practical for defensive purposes but with lower quality materials (doesn't matter for protection but if you use it for other things they won't hold their edge to well.)

You can only get the glock model 81 now unless you find a 78 used, so that means you're gonna either go used or get one with the big saw on the back. The glock knives overall are better suited for harder use than the kobun.

Kobun has more penetrating power but can't be used as an outdoor knife as well. Also much easier to conceal.

If you only want it for defence both knives are fine, really depends on your needs.

I would also check out the cold steel recon tanto since its in a similar price bracket to a kabar, and is basically a longer kobun with better materials. Another option would be the ontario knives such as the marine force sp1, which is basically a kabar except cheaper and has arguably better construction for outdoor use.

>>34867780
You can still buy the 78 new some places. Glock made a shit ton before discontinuing. The price has actually dropped since the popularity of the 81 has risen. I just found one new for $25. 81 also switched from spring steel to carbon steel to make the saw last longer. The 81 holds a better edge but I still like me the 78 more.

If you can open the knife with a flick of the wrist from the full closed position it is considered a gravity knife.

Most folders that get lose and can be flicked open without pressing the blade can be considered a gravity knife.

criminal-defense-law-nyc.com/blog/always-examine-gravity-knife/

Apparently New York has been having issues with this. People are getting arrested for legal knives that turned into gravity blades over time.

It's flat so it wouldn't get stuck in bone. During trench fighting they found a knife would get stuck in an enemy and wouldn't be able to remove it quickly. A stab with a hefty blade will penetrate regardless of tip, this one has no lag time when pulling it out.

Leaf here, believe it or not Canada has exactly 0 laws that dictacte blade length. Push button autos, butterfly and "concealed" (eg belt buckle knife) are a no go. There are a few lines about flick/gravity knives but they're so poorly worded that they won't last 5 seconds in court. Fun fact: police will often make shit up to justify a stop. Most of those laws exist to pile on charges for people they arrest for other stuff (eg. Drug dealers)

It's magnificent. S30v is extremely easy to keep sharp and holds that edge for long periods of time. I tend to carry it with my 0630cf in case I run into something that requires a thinner edge. Despite being a straight edge blade, you will find it good for cutting food, boxes, people. It's truly a box-cutter on steroids.

Literally everybodys biggest complaints about it are that the hole is too small (for sausage finger PM2 fanboys) and that the cutout for lock is too narrow (again, for sausage finger PM2 fanboys).

Swamp Rat Rodent 4 in SR101 steel

Bradford Guardian 4 in 3V

Both are almost same price (bradford comes with a kydex sheath, rodent does not, so +$30-40)

Anyone have experience with either one? It LOOKS like the rodent has the more comfier handle, but it seems 3V is much tougher and wont chip so readily.

It's one of my favorite looking spyderco knives I've ever had. I got it mostly for aesthetics, so it doesn't see very much hard use. The blade has such a downward angle to it you barely have to bend your wrist to bring the tip forward, and I find that pretty cool

Decent quality for the price.

>do you immediately believing everything
That's what I get for posting before coffee.

Anyways my point is that there's pretty much no hard evidence that intentionally squared tips were a thing in any real capacity. I've heard one reputable story of such a thing but the user supposedly did it for utilitarian purposes. I have never seen a primary source for this phenomenon. Rounded blades were common to the degree that more obtuse points became a standard feature on later models of FS and some offshoots but that's a far cry from the pic I posted, which was in fact just a broken knife.

I've got some gripes about the hardware and handle design, but goddamn does it slice. Have yet to reprofile it as the factory bevel has been good to me thus far. I suspect this one is a keeper.

Yeah I was waiting for him to say that so I could point out the difference between the orange rust he is thinking about and the surface patina on my knife. I was going to make some sort of comparison to a rusty nail laying in a field for years and my knife that I care for daily.

Love the dauntless! It's actually my favorite.
I haven't given TAD a single cent since they screwed over Patrick. I still get their Friday drop emails and it really seems like everything they've done since Patrick's been gone is lame. They are going off in some weird tacticool hipster bull shit direction.
I have a feeling the SMF is fake. It was a gift from a really good friend.

How often do you use a knife for anything that a small pocket multitool wouldn't be able to handle? I'm just wondering if these are knives for collecting or you actually need emergency backup swords for some reason.

Kabar's kind of like Kleenex, it's a brand name that's often used as a substitution for the name of the product. Some quick Googling shows that your knife does indeed appear to be from a legitimate manufacturer of this design during WW2 if that's your concern.
>>
>>34913032
>it really seems like everything they've done since Patrick's been gone is lame.
yes i agree. those faggy two-tone packs and all that luggage + tons of clothes
the people who work the retail stores now also seem like hueg fags too
Michael Weiss is a hueg shekel hungry jew
they're just another meaningless brand with no substance now

Spyderco is a reputable manufacturer. I'll also recommend Opinel (they lock though) and Douk-Douk.

>>34913771
What's your budget?

>>34914404
From Benchmade:
>N690- An Austrian made stainless steel, which is comparable to 440C in performance and value. Keen edge qualities with excellent corrosion resistance.

440C is a decent stainless steel that's is used in everything from cheap chinkshit to a variation of ESEE's Izula. DESU you should worry more about consistently good heat treatment than steel, we've reached the point at which even cheapass Chinkshit is made with steel that people would've sucked your dick for relatively recently in human history.

Fuck, Marry, Kill
>>
>>34914485
I enjoy mine. Really good action and is a very pretty knife, even if the blade is not terribly thin and has a horrendous plunge grind.
>>
>>34881545
I love the profile of those strider blades all up to the finger choil. I will never understand that hole and handle though.
>>
>>34914561

fuck the kabar, marry the middle and kill myself
>>
>>34914619
the hole is the same as the Spyderco hole, the pin through the blade is a stop pin, not a thumb stud:
the handles may look weird, but they fit so comfortably in your hand. i think so anyway
i guess they're not for everyone
>>
>>34914344
Check the Spyderco UK Pen knives, a lot of variety. I also like the Spyderco Pingo and Spyderco squeak which should both be UK legal also.

I always wonder how Jay Fisher manages to sell such huge and impractical knives at high dollar. I understand big goofy knives, they're fun. I understand expensive knives, they're good. I don't understand why anyone would buy the intersection of goofy and expensive.
