what the fuck /k/ you mean to tell me I could've had ATF free black powder goodness for this cheap all along?

why does nobody talk about these
>>
>>34852568
because the cheap ones are meh. brass frames stretch out if you shoot it regularly. steel frames are 300+. 300 gets you a bunch of used modern revolvers
>>
>>34852568
Do you live under a rock? BP threads are all over /k/. They're not as big as /ARG/ because it's more of a niche interest but it's no secret.
>>
>>34852596
You can snag steel 1858s and 1851s on cabelas all day for $200-$250. I'd still say those are priced competitively to modern guns to remain an option.
>>

My Uberti 1860 colt was 300 and I have absolutely zero regrets. Most fun and relaxing to shoot gun I own, and it's reliable enough to where I can fan the hammer like Clint Eastwood.
>>
Generally speaking, the only people who own, or at least post on /k/ about, these things are convicted felons who want something for self defense, but can't own a real gun.

Either that, or cowboy autists.
>>
>>34853046
nah man its all under 21 dumbasses who want a handgun or even worse want it for ccw. felons just spend that 150-300 on a highpoint glock40 from jamal. they dont fall for the blackpowder meme.

I bought mine because I was bored of my cartridge firing guns. For some reason, the more involved and laborious the gun is to use, the more fun and relaxing it is for me to shoot. I very much recommend it.

Ubertis are better than Pietta or Traditions (they're the same thing in this context, in that Traditions has theirs made by Pietta). Just hold one of each, and you'll feel the difference.
>>
>>34853046
I don't need a license for these?
>>
>>34853046
Nah, they're really fun and cheap. Already own a Pietta 1851, pretty sure my next gun will be a Hawken rifle.

Well, also, you forgot former Boy Scouts, because we got to shoot black powder and it was fucking boss.
>>
>>34853220
I'm aware uberti is much higher quality. I'm just saying piettas are worth the price and not bad guns by any means
>>
Is there any difference between the "london" models and the rest other than the material used?
Does it even make a difference?

I like blackpowder rifles far more than pistols. I think its because i feel like i do more shooting with the rifle, im sure its not but just reloading the rifle is quicker than reloading the pistol.

>>
>>34853239
federally they're not legal firearms. Your state law may say otherwise.
>>
>>34852568
Don't listen to retards who tell you a brass frame will stretch. 24 grains of black behind a .36 caliber lead ball is NOT enough recoil to deform a brass frame. If you buy one and want it run like a watch, be prepared for some work. The timing on the hand is almost always shoddy, there's no polish on the internals, and the nipples are almost always sized for some random Italian percussion cap. Be prepared to break it down and spend some time stoning, polishing, and filing contact points inside the frame. You'll likely need a new hand within 250 rounds through the gun and that will require hand fitting. Lastly, you clean a BP revolver every single time you shoot it, and you can't use the same solvents and oils as your other guns. You do not want ANY petroleum based products on a BP gun as it will bind with the fouling and harden it into a lump of coal.

It's not only about the lead, it's about the powder and caps. If you don't already know, that is where the money starts to bleed. And who knows how the wads were formed or found. It takes real tradition to know most of these things, not by who sell to you. Otherwise there would be more incidents with people blowing up their relics with cheaper smokeless powder if anyone knew how to reload such a firearm.
>>
>>34852568
Annoying to use
Can't, shouldn't leave loaded for extended period of time.
Fragile
Underpowered
Thick to carry

They're horrible edc guns and they lack the power of a modern 44mag.
>>

If I recall correctly, the London models used iron for the trigger guard and strap. Other than that, they were more or less the same. Keep in mind that if you're buying a reproduction, no matter who makes it, it will never be as good or well made as the originals. Colt added all kinds of neat little mechanical extras that modern manufacturers just don't do.

Question:
Can a Canadian non resident buy one to have at their property in the states?
>>
>>34858793
A 5 pound keg of BP at 45 dollars is 35,000 grains. Assuming STOUT .44 loads from a revolver (and keeping math easy) 35 grains per charge gives you 1,000 shots. Let's assume that lead balls are about the same price, you cast your own which is easy enough and you buy lead from a local source, we're at 90 dollars per 1,000 rounds. Add in caps, which are 6 dollars per hundred, we're at 150 dollars per 1,000 rounds fired, or 15 cents per shot. This is less than 9mm Luger, the cheapest round to fire that isn't .22lr. Cost for a mild .36 caliber load, I.E. a navy load of 24 grains, reduces cost to roughly 12 cents a round, which is the same price as match grade .22.

In short, jump off a bridge you dumb hack.
>>

>>
>>34864493
Chain firing won't hurt you, it'll just give you a good scare.the "secret" to avoid a chain fire is a proper patch in front of the powder. You don't want a cloth patch like a rifle, you want basically a felt wad that fits tight in the chamber. If the wad itself is dry, apply some lube on top of the wad then seat the ball on top of it. A proper wad ensures there is no powder on the sides of the chamber and helps seal the powder from the next chamber. You can buy prelubed wads that make things easier, cleaner, and much more reliable.
>>
>>34852596

Brass framed .44's will deform with stout loads. Brass framed .36's can be filled to the tippy top with powder and the frame will be fine.

Tbh bp guns are not as fun as you think they are.
Shooting them is fun as hell but i get on average 1-2 misfires per cylinder so yeah... accuracy is good up to 25-30 meters and cleaning the guns is terrible. I spend 1,5h on cleaning my Uberti Cattleman.
But i still enjoy them because shooting the .44 with 28 grains of powder makes everybody look at you and it makes you feel like you are firing a cannon.
>>
>>34868283

>>
>>34868417

Cowboy Autist here, just got finished trimming the mainspring in my pietta 1858, looking forward to taking it to the range. Also for those who are interested in getting into blackpowder, you know how when you're shooting for a while the smell of burning powder gets into your nose and it's pretty enjoyable for a bit? Black powder smoke smells like a campfire or a barbecue or something. Maximum over-comfy.
>>34853512
>.36 or .44?
I have a .44 Pietta 1858 and even it feels pretty anemic to shoot, I would side away from the .36 for that reason. That said if you have small hands the .36 might help you shoot more reliably.

They're impractical as fuck compared to modern firearms and anyone with an iq over 50 could make blackpowder and a shooting stick for about 30$. Regulating them would be a waste of time and money. You can still shoot stuff with them though. People were killing each other with these for a century.

FYI, you can buy inoffensive and easy to install cartridge conversion cylinders for basically all of these old black powder guns from .44 Dragoons to .36 Navies from Taylor and Co. I think.

Only issue is that any given cylinder replacement tends to cost as much as the gun it goes to, so that doubles the price, but it can be worth it. Gotta be careful about certain loads though.

Hello 1990's! Uburti was bought by Beretta holdings, and some years ago they put Uburti under the control of Benelli management. They shifted some production to Benelli shops, consolidated some other manufacturing, and went on a cost-cutting program that pretty much ruined quality.

Meanwhile, Pietta has been implementing a modernization program with emphasis on CNC. They've also gotten rid of the "Pietta tail" and new production 1851's feature the classic grip shape that once you hold, you feel like you've always held it...

SVM discounts them by 15 and 20% every so often, buy the anticipated value you need ahead of time

if you cant wait or need one last minute, this place is great and you get it by email pretty quick but the discount is a lot less. still, 10% off 150 is an extra 15 bucks you can spend on 100 lead balls to go with it

using this method i buy .22lr from cabelas for 2cpr

cash back with them takes 3 months since it disperses quarterly though

I own multiple of both, and the difference is negligible. Especially considering the Ubertis are sometimes hundreds of dollars more expensive, just get a Pietta

1863 Remington pockets are better. They're the same size and load, but they're a lot more durable. They're literally scaled down 58 New Armys.

Kinda embarrasing, but I used to carry one before I had a license.

Wew boy. I had trouble with my pietta. QC just isn't there for them. If you're willing to tinker and replace a few parts, pietta is fine. If you want something that works out of the box, get an uberti.

You can own real handguns but you can't legally carry concealed until you turn 21 and get a licence unless you live in one of a handful of states that doesn't require that.

The fit and finish on originals is (or was) generally better, but for me the three main shortfalls of modern repros are lack of gain twist rifling (which really does help round ball accuracy out of a short barrel), lack of deburring and polishing of the hammer surfaces (the most common cause of the infamous "colt wave"), and making the cylinder/rammer press arch too low to accommodate paper cartridges. Sure, you can polish the hammer and raise the arch yourself, but it just annoys the hell out of me to have to do somebody else's job for them. It's also a crapshoot whether or not modern internals are worth a damn in a repro pistol. By rights it should be, considering that that really good steel is as common as dirt these days, but occasionally you'll find that some asshole in Prague or China or wherever decided that properly tempering and timing tiny spring mechanisms just wasn't for him that day, leaving you with an eight pound paperweight after a few rounds. This isn't as common as it used to be, but it still happens. The loading levers and barrel wedges also often leave much to be desired, with the former being loosely fitted and badly pinned (the use of modern steel makes this less catastrophic than it could be, but still) and the latter usually lacking the retaining spring to keep it in place without a screw. Don't get me wrong, most of these issues are either addressable or ignorable, but there we are.

Have you tried lapping the bores? Might just be burrs leftover from rifling as I havent seen much difference when even well preserved historical examples are shot next to modern repros

This.
Uberti's have been getting worse, while Pietta's have gotten better.
Not to mention an Uberti is sold for like twice the price of a Pietta, and parts are equally expensive as well as more difficult to find, and their customer service is worse...
