Do you switch depending on the type of gun you are shooting?
I find myself using the first joint for all of my firearms besides rifles that do not have pistol grips. What about you?
I use my dick

it changes depending on gun. its not that important either. the important part is consistency not location.

My hands aren't too big and I shoot Glocks, so I use the finger placement of the one on the left, but my hand looks like the one on the right when I do
A. is the correct answer. B. Makes you shoot like shit. Sure you can learn B but A is the good habit.

Many firearms instructors teach that method A is the correct way, but it tends to not really matter, as long as you practice that way and that the way you use makes sense for your finger length.
Shooters with large hands who have practiced their whole lives with method A and still struggle with accuracy sometimes have found that switching to method B instantly fixed all of their issues. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8JX2hZR_6g
Also, I believe I've heard Hickok45 say that he typically doesn't use the pad of his finger because his fingers are so long, although I don't recall if he said he uses the joint or the "second pad."
I have short/medium length fingers and I use the pad of my finger for everything except double action revolvers, which I shoot with the first joint of my finger on the trigger. It just works better that way.
