/k/ this is a question I've been worried about for awhile and I think it's coming to a head and want to hear some varied advice:
A few years ago I was in a situation where I acted stupidly, specifically someone in my college was basically stalking me, being very odd around me. One day I was walking to class and he chased me down. I had a pocket knife on me and I pulled it out, and he stopped short, fell down and I yelled at him,
"Leave me alone or I'm calling the cops."
I walked away he walked away. Turns out someone saw this, called the police (which I wish I had, that would have changed everything). Long story short I got charged with Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon, and plead nolo contest (it was in Florida) and they gave me Adjudication Withheld, to which I did complete the probation with no issue.
Skip ahead ~6 years I got an engineering degree and am *very* close to finally getting a job (job market sucks right now) and it's in NY where they aren't allowed to do a background check until AFTER they have given you a provisional offer. I am now not sure what to do. From what I have read, because no other state has "Adjudication Withheld" every other state treats it like a conviction, even though in Florida it is expressly not (you can still vote, own a gun ect) so I cannot see how this won't come up and present a problem. And for an engineering job, I don't know how they will react. I am pretty sure they will ask my permission some time next week to run the back ground check and I don't know what to do, if I should pre-empt an explanation or what. Anyone know what to do? I feel very fucked by the past and not sure what the hell I'm supposed to do.
Will bump with weapon stuff/jokes.
