A friend of mine went into the Navy as an unrated fireman because his recruiter told him he'd be working as an actual fireman on a base somewhere.
For non-Navy: "fireman" is the generic term for anyone who works in the engineering department, their equivalent of "seaman." An unrated fireman is the bottom of the barrel and basically cleans bilges all day.
