.357 Mag is so good that no one wants to carry it, what a great round.

I CC a snub .357. Used to OC a S&W 19. What's your point?
People probably don't carry them because the cylinder has a fucking 1 inch bulge on your hip unless you're a fatass who can throw his rolls over it.

fine. never had problems with any of their ammo i've used so far, .357, 9mm, 5.56 anyways

>.357 Mag is so good that no one wants to carry it, what a great round.

Yeah, and 10mm is so good that hot 10mm will break every single gun chambered in it within 5k rounds if that gun isn't a Glock.
>>
>>34823665
Point is people talk up .357 like its the best shit ever, but few people actually use it for defensive use.

>b-but it has too much muzzle flash and noise and recoil

Why hype something up if you don't actually use it for its intended purpose?
>>
>>34823739
Limpwristed urbanite detected. Plenty of people who live in the actual United States carry .357 every single day.
>>
>>34823739
>it has too much muzzle flash and noise and recoil
no it doesnt
>>
>>34823455
Who fucking cares? Either .357 or .38 will effectively stop a dindu, so use either. People on /k/ seem angle to get away from the weird fantasy that they're going to get mugged by Robocop, so nothing short of maximum stoppin' powah is acceptable. More mall ninja bullshit. Use and carry whatever you like - it'll all do fine in the real world.
>>
>>34823777
"angle" = "unable"... stupid autocorrect.
>>
>>34823522
>S&B .357

Not OP but at that point you might as well go ahead and buy .38 Spl +P.
>>
>>34823777
>Use and carry whatever you like - it'll all do fine in the real world.

I get what you're saying, but the way you say this gives off the implication that even carrying .22 LR is acceptable if that's what someone likes.
>>
>>34823455
if you can't handle 357 you're a fag
>>
>>34823455
Plenty of people carry it, and plenty of people carry a gun chambered for it, but loaded with .38 Special +P. I'm not sure what your experience with the cartridge is, but it's got the reputation it has for a reason.
>>
357 is good for target practice, home defense, and anything smaller than grizzly bears.

357 is not good for snub nose revolvers or grizzle bears. Use a 38Spl or a 44 mag, respectively.
>>
>>34823875
People often recommend 10mm for bear repellent, so why can't 357 work against bears?
>>
>>34823834
.22 is adequate. Note what I said: not "ideal", but "adequate". .22 is the equivalent of someone pounding a quarter-inch roofing nail into your chest at 1200 feet per second. A couple of rounds of that at realistic self-defense ranges is going to stop basically any real-world attacker. Would I be more comfortable carrying something with more power? I would, and I do. But again, .22 is adequate, if not ideal.
>>
>>34823777
Checked.

>>34823834
I don't know man, if something in .22lr is the gun and round they're most effectively able to use I don't think there's anything wrong with using it. It's not the best for most folks but if the person in question is small framed, disabled in some way, or an elderly person, or whatever there certainly are worse options out there.
>>
>>34823834

Plenty of people actually do carry .22 guns.
Remember that .25 ACP, the wimpy skinnyfat centerfire brother of .22 LR, was at one point considered a perfectly viable choice for a pocket gun.
>>
>>34823455
.40 S&W is the best handgun cartridge because it has terminal ballistics comparable to /357 Mag duty loads but works in plastic autoloaders that people will actually carry.
>>
>>34824249
For self-defense use, most pistol (not just .40) JHP ammo today performs roughly the same as 125 gr .357 Mag

125gr .357 had the reputation it did because it had the velocity to reliably expand, but modern ammo solves that issue so almost any caliber can achieve reliable expansion
>>
>>34823641
Yankee Marshall confirmed. Start another clearing bucket thread you retard.
>>
>>34824328
>9mm has the same performance as .357 Magnum

The mating cry of a mall ninja.

>inb4 you incorrectly cite the Fackler study that only covers autoloading pistols in duty calibers
>inb4 some kind of cherrypicked sample case where you compare the ballistics of Winchester White Box .357 target loads vs. your boutique Buffalo UnderDoubletap Borewood ammunition that costs $1 per round in order to "prove" that 9mm is as strong as .357 Magnum.

The cylinder isn't the important part because its under the belt. The important part is the grip, and the grip is thinner. I'm full skeleton mode and I cc my SP101 easier than my Makarov, although both conceal excellently.

People like .357 because it's extremely versatile. You get a good strong mid size revolver chambered in it, you can use it as a carry, home defense, and hunting gun assuming you use the right loads for each. Are there better options for each scenario? Yes. But if you only have one gun, you might as well have one that can do it all until you build up your collection. My first handgun was pic related
>>
>>34825813
This, you can load .357 from ".38 special" to a viable hunting round for mid-size game within 100 yards.

No other pistol round really has that type of variety while still being extremely common to find and decently cheap to buy for self-defense rounds (go to any walmart and they will have JHP for .357). Shotgun shells can compete with variety, sure, but other common pistol rounds? No.

I can't argue for or against .45LC so that may be able to compare against .357 in terms of versatility, but it is also a lot rarer and hard to find guns in. Straightwall, rimmed cartridges still have uses if you are going full-retard with hand-loading.
>>
I carry .357 mag because I fucking feel like carrying .357 mag. I don't give a shit about your statistics and neither does my gun. A mugger can tell me about 10mm all he wants as he's dying on the ground.
>>
People like to carry airweight j-frames, that's why they carry +p .38 special

>>34823586
They're ballistic twins you chode
>>
>>34823455
If carrying a 4" revolver with a 2" wide cylinder was as easy as carrying a .99" wide 3.5" barrel shield then more people would be carrying .357 mag. The velocity of .357 magnum out of a 4" barrel is significantly greater than out of a 2" snub nose revolver. Firing 357 out of a snub is no different than firing .38sp ballistically.

>>
>>34823896
Not him, but it may have something to do with bullet weight. 357 has energy to spare, but 10mm has projectiles that weigh up to 230-240grain. That helps with penetration.
But he did specify grizzlies, so it's a different weight class than any other bears besides polar bears. .357 is fine for Black bears and animals of similar size.

The .357 was invented so high pressure .38 loads couldn't be chambered in guns designed for low pressure .38 loads. If you're loading modern .38 +P, you're probably getting all the muzzle energy of WW2 era .357 anyways.
