Firearms technology progressed super rapidly from about 1850 to 1950, and technologies got to be obsolete very quickly. The US military went through five different service rifles in the fifty years between 1870 and 1920, while in the last fifty years it's had basically one - the M-16 platform, with only incremental improvements in the same basic idea. That's kind of how it goes when you have a rapid pace of improvement in a technology.
