What are /k/'s thoughts on the SIG SG-510? It's a pretty obscure Cold War-era weapon and has the status of the heaviest standard issue rifle in history (12.5lbs)

In fact there's only 1 video on the internet of the non-civilian version being fired.
>>
I think they're cool fuck, and I'd love to own one.

There are plenty videos to be found if you search Stgw 57 or Fass 57, you dingu. In Switzerland it's one of the cheapest rifle you can get, and there are hundred of thousands of them around.

Like you said, it's heavy as fuck, it's long as hell. It can fire rifle grenades. It's a delayed blowback action. From all battle-rifles around (G3, FAL, CETME, M14...), I assume that the Stgw 57 is the most accurate one (probably thanks to its diopter sight and bipod). Tests on In Range TV showed that it isn't particularly reliable when covered with mud.

It was a weapon designed in a country where four generations of people have grown up since the last combat took place (five if you count actual wars and not joke internal struggles that took three weeks and resulted in a couple dozen dead on either side), and not a single person who saw active combat was alive.
Designed by people who thought individual marksmanship is the single thing that affects infantry combat effectivity.

It would make for a sweet DMR if you could look past the weight, though.

>>34818886
The bipod can be moved between the central and the front position. This is doctrin bound. the bipod in the middle was standard for the infantry man, as he also used rifle grenades and the legs are the range scales. The bipod in the front position was for defended positions and automatic fire.

Its just been a couple of years where the requirement to have the bipod in the middle in the ranges has been lifted, since the Stgw 57 finaly was phased out of the last reserve unit.

They should have gone the whole hog and copied the Swiss military program of losing wars to France, declaring "neutrality" because you suck and then avoiding wars for centuries.
>>
>>34818986
Youre somewhat right.
Swiss rifles are just match rifles. They are not really made for war, thats why theyre the only ones who dont use a chrome lining just to get an increased precision instead of war-durability.

But their training on the other hand is top notch. It is expected from EVERY soldier to hit a target at 300m with just IRON SIGHTS (unlike german army where they only use scopes even at that range)

There is one possibility to induce runaway fire with the 90. But it is so unlikely to happen since the reciever itself would be destroyed beforehand. If one certain notch/plate of the FA was grinded down, the insertion of a loaded magazine would cause the rifle to shoot until empty. I need to stress that this is not physicaly possible with even the most abusive use, but only with the sabotage of the rifle itself.

Since SAN doesnt produce any more barrels and just buys them from a german(?) barrel maker, the quality went down.

As far as I know, the army itself doesnt even have any new barrels anymore and when you claim that your barrel is shot out, they just replace it with an already (less) used one.

The contract with SAN ended a long time ago and SAN doesnt produce parts anymore by themselves.

Seriously ? That's impossible.

I've already seen a degradation of the condition of the rifles between 2014 and 2017.
When I received mine at the beginning of the RS in 2014 it was brand new like the others.
This year I have seen the "new" Stgw90s that the recruits received. All the rifles were worn (painting gone in a few spots and stock/handguard scratched) some even had rust on the gas block and the gas tube.

>"it has an x on it, so it can be rusted"

So this what the famous "x" means... Mine is not marked.
>>
>>34820766
Im back.
No the x marks that it has been refurbished. Same with an R on the front of the tube. AKA machine steel brush kill the rust and oil it as to keep it from rusting. If the issued person fails to keep it in normal condition it will rust.
>>
>>34819699
If you are still in the reserve, yes.
>>
>>34822075
>refurbished

So basically they never change the gas tube.
>>
>>34822713
There is a rule of thumb. There are two states of being in which the gas tube is being replaced. State one: the AdA firmly holds the gas tube in both hands and is able to move both hands independently as the gas tube has rusted through the middle. In which case the AdA gets fucked by Feldi for negligence in maintenance and needs to pay a small fee. State two: A 150kg tank grenadier and two compagnions have recieved the order to storm a building through the window in the first floor. As per outdated Reglement they use the maneuver gren ladder, consisting in the two compagnons grabing the rifle at each end and catapulting the 150kg tank grenadier up to the ledge of the first floor window. As the 90, as opposed to the 57, is not stable enough for this the gas tube and piston will have to be removed by the armorer as they are bent as shit.

I was all this summer in a Piranha and it fucking SUCKS. It's a fucking oven hotter than those in Auschwitz, it's already fucking tight and it get even worse when you are with 7 other guys in kampfkomplett and breacher set, minimi, etc.

It's already 35°C outside and you haven't even already run with all your shitty equipment but you're already wet as fuck.

The ONLY cool thing with the Piranha is the moment when the ramp goes down and you take 360° position.
