I've put more hours into NV than 3,4 combined. 1,2 will always hold a place in my heart because they were so good. Gameplay is dated, but the atmosphere and stories were great.

I liked all the Fallout games just about equally. Always found it funny that the least polished/finished game gets the most praise.

Minutemen would have been a lot better if they actually existed beyond oddball settlers just hanging around. Just because you have a flag doesn't mean you're an army. At least the BOS actually wandered around and killed shit.

This is what I was talking about. My settlements are so well armed that my level 90 character in X01 super power armor would struggle to take it in a frontal assault that would trash my suit and use up all my stimpaks, yet level 5 ghouls and raiders are apparently a threat to my settlements that put the Fallout 3 Pentagon (or, frankly, the real Pentagon) to shame.

Set up on Sanctuary Island. I turned the place into Hitler's Atlantic Wall only with laser beams and a mutfruit plantation.

The Raiders would hit it at night and all I could see of them would be crossed laser beams and the trails of rockets. I rarely even found bodies because the volume of missile fire would toss the pieces into the ocean.

I had this one settlement that was always getting fucked by ghouls. So I deported every single person there to other settlements, then replaced them with tricked out sentry bots. Every one had a mini nuke launcher and dual miniguns. Then I ringed the joint with heavy laser turrets and minefields.

Spotted the worthless teenager. Fallout 1 and 2 are easily the best games of the series. There's so much you can do. So much love and detail put into the worldcrafting. You also don't realize how mind-blowing these games were when they first came out. Back then, it was unusual for RPGs to even be set in a non-medieval fantasy setting. Bethesda has no idea how to handle this franchise. FO4 was way too brightly colored, with retarded weapon designs, flat characters, and honestly did nothing to make me care about anyone.

That's the point.

Fallout is supposed to be post-post apocalyptic: the world's already started to rebuild and the new nations are making the same mistakes as the old ones. Fallout 3 feels like it takes place 20 years after the bombs fell, not 200 years. It's still interesting seeing people carving out shelters in the ruins and scavenging, but it's not the same Fallout vibe.

I've read that Bethesda wanted to see Fallout 3 a lot closer to the time the bombs dropped, which would have made a lot more sense, but didn't because dude brotherhood of steel and Enclave lmao.

My problem with 3 and 4's setting depiction is less about limited building (I could see that being a regional issue), and more about the fact that so much of the world seems to have remained nearly untouched since the bombs fell. Skeletons of the bombing victims are not only present, but intact and posed. Items like weapons and medicine remain unscavenged and in good condition, despite being near populated areas and exposed to the elements. FO4 has a lot of small boats and barges in the waters around Boston that appear to have not only survived multiple nearby strategic nuclear weapon hits, but also 200 years in sea water without maintenance. I see some notes on a possible diving quest, and something about an underwater vault (perhaps the same thing). That still doesn't provide a good explanation for the fact that all those those boats are still around.

On a related note, I really wish they'd thought to provide a reasonable way to move through water in power armor (perhaps a propulsion backpack like the jet pack). That got really frustrating at some points.

That's actually why the game is shit in my opinion. I remember playing through the Point Lookout and the game requiring me to kill all but about 3 people, one of which was killed by someone else. Games that just have you killing endless amounts of enemies to push forward a shitty plot that I have no reason to care about really don't do it for me. Going through the subways was also lame due to the enemy types constantly changing for no real reason, other than waring factions all deciding to all set up camp within 10 feet of each other.

I would have been fine with that thing if they'd just called it a machine gun and had it use full sized cartridges (and appropiate capacity, damage, range, and recoil). A Lewis/Maxim/Madsen/Bren is kind of a neat idea, even if unrealistic, and that's clealry what the artist who came up with the thing had in mind. I could see the Automatic Rifle category making a comeback with the introduction of power armor.

I'm still irritated about the dumb damage model they used. Full-auto should add recoil and maybe hurt accuracy. They tried to abstract that away by directly reducing damage instead and ended up making full auto guns useless due to the unnecessarily dumb way they made armor work (and even more so with ammo weight enabled). This game containeda lot of good ideas messed up by incomplete and uncoordinated implementations. Even the story could have been fixed while retaining most of the same elements.

There is waaaaaay to little focus on the fact that you are a veteran of the Canadian occupation, Alaska campaign, and/or have literally been to the gobi desert shooting chinks with a Gatling laser. It's all the motivation any faction needed to want you and your knowledge of prewar military installations. You should have started the game deciding to head to the nearest military checkpoint only to find it full of raider scum who are scripted to try and rob you (who you can vats in the dick, try and join, or kill their leader and become ruler of barter town)

The institute should want you because of some maguffin regarding Gene seed and because they need to you to find a vault/installation in the glowing sea you already know about due to prewar security clearance.

BoS should be fucking worshipping you and asking for advice on everything from powerarmor tactics to military bases. You're literally the same as the US army who founded the Brotherhood of steel. It also makes a fuckton more sense for them to immediately make you a knight after you rattle off your rank and talk about your time in the service.

Same reason why the minutemen would trust you to lead them in a larger way than Preston going "sheeeeeeit we fukkin suk hep me out nigga"

Also why deacon would want you as a one man wrecking ball and a tie in to actually finding a set of T51 powerarmor in a mission to paint up in minutemen colors to become the railroads only true defense against coursers and actually go on the offensive.

yeah. Like I said, I left main story for last and enjoyed doing 100% of side quests and exploring absolutely everything. there's also survival difficulty similar to nv but I saved that for a future play through. the new skill system is a bit off putting but not game breaking, level scaling is good. all dlc is piratable and installed like mods so no need to drop $ on that. far harbor is good, wasteland workshop if you get into settlement building, rest is trash.

lots of good /k/ mods. crude blowback (pic) is amazing for early game in .38 and .45. RU556 and AK74M are essential once 5.56 starts spawning. the best USP mod is not the most popular one, that one has fucked up proportions but I guess normies can't tell the difference. decent P220 and 1911 mods too. and of course Garand in 308. there's a really good NCR ranger armor recreation.

best summed up as a great game, but not a great fallout game because muh rpg elements. I enjoyed modding and creating my post apocalyptic ethno-state enough to forgive it for its shortcomings.

BoS, especially in the east, is not a government. Nor is it likely to have more than 1,500 personnel across all roles. The NCR has an army with division-level formations and a fully functional administrative bureaucracy. The comparison is silly.

At this point, once the NCR is able to figure out an effective means to produce new automobiles, the reclamation of the US is all but inevitable. I would not be surprised to read that shortly after the events of Fallout 4, the NCR had begun or was already bulldozing the old cities to reclaim resources and lebensraum with brand new construction.

Every other game has made raiders essentially lone actors or 3-5 guys. Once you get to the level of organization where THE ONLY COMMUNITIES in the Commonwealth are "raiders" who all trade and work together then the fact that they shoot on sight and will run onto your bullets is retarded. Even in the New Vegas engine they were able to make the powder gangers neutral until you shot one of them or Hung around one of their camps for too long/too close. They had the perfect opportunity to creat a joinable raider faction in their flagship quest where you are hired by the raiders to help kill all the pricks who didn't pay the toll to cross their territory (otherwise they'll shoot you too- intro to normal minutemen good goy quest chain) and after you shoot Preston in the fucking face that deathclaw shows up in town and you and your raider buddies need to find a way to escape from the giant lizard killing everyone outside. Queue you dusting off that powerarmor because you're a pre war veteran and good of war and solidifying your rep amongst the Commonwealths raider tribes.

What i mean by the need to create antagonists is that, when you come down to it, they are kinda running out of ideas.

There really isn't a lot of variety in terms of enemy factions. You have tribals (Great Khans, Jackals, White Legs), a "modern"-ish army (NCR), Mobile Suit Infantry (BoS, Enclave), and Raiders (fiends).

But going forward, they can't just recycle the Enclave again, or it will feel weirdly forced. "Hey, didn't these guys get BTFO on an Oil Rig and in DC twice? Why aren't they dead??"

Even the BoS is starting to get overplayed. It would work much better if it was made clear that they BoS was heading East to avoid the NCR. That would have been an excellent reason for their presence in the East Coast. We know the NCR BTFO them before, it wouldn't be unreasonable for the BoS to flee east under the guise of "getting technology", when really they just need to form a technostate away from the NCR.

The most damning thing is that Bethesda clearly touched on the Raider thing a little. The Saugus Iron Works raiders were at least somewhat unique. They had their own special gear and preferred weapons that made them flavorful. They had a named leader. They weren't just "raiders #123243". If they split Fallout 4's map into 6-8 raider turfs, with turf wars and distinct flavors of raider, it would help with monotony. iD did it with the similar post-apocalypse game RAGE. While it was something of a flop, each raider gang had distinct look and fighting styles and hideouts.

Even in OBLIVION, there are rival Goblin Clans and you can deliberately make those clans fight by stealing their totems and dropping them elsewhere. If it works in Oblivion, it would work in Fallout 4, it's just a matter of will.

After enough mods I found myself enjoying Fallout 4. Principally, they focused around fixing bethesdas fucking abortions. Weapons mods to get rid of the retarded weapons, alternate start mod so I could do my own thing. PC voice removal, and an Reshade preset to get rid of the retardedly bright and happy atmosphere the game seemed to have. I also fucked around with config file to increase the fov, remove the Framerate Cap and Mouse acceleration, which would make me feel physically sick

You have to stay away from anything even resembling a main quest, but I got it working in the end. Then again, it's more a testament to how good the modding community is, rather than how good fallout 4 is.

part 3/3 (rage)

Here's what I'd do if I was writing Fallout 4:

1- Try out the entire planned main story arc on Pen and Paper. That's right, we are playing Dungeons and Dragons: Fallout Edition before we commit. Why? Because this will reveal a number of weaknesses in plot ("huh that doesn't make much sense now that we see it") and allow writers to see more protagonist choices ("huh, I guess you COULD solve it that way... let's code that in").

2- Do the same for every side mission

3- Actually have interesting side missions that aren't exclusively linked to companions. The USS Constitution was the high-point of the entire game

4- Acknowledge that it's okay to limit player options... SO LONG as it is consistent with their past choices (Are you a raider? Guess you aren't getting into _____ now)

5- Resurrect the faction system used in Fallout: New Vegas

6- Make your enemies varied not just in crude type (human, robot, mutant) but within themselves (different raider groups, as mentioned above). This goes double for humans.

7-Keep the world moving and alive. As the players advance through the plot, things should be noticeably changing. If you are in an NCR vs. Legion type situation, as you progress through the help-NCR quests I should be seeing NCR bases expanding. I should be seeing Legion camps setting up. Note, we DO see this in F:NV to an extent, but in Fallout 4 it is very abrupt (Airship suddenly appears in Act II). This should be true for NPCs who are on your protags' side too; my settlements shouldn't just be subsistence hovels when I've invested 100,000 caps into each.

8- Realize its okay for player to fail when they fail to act/act improperly. Not every play-style will find the "best" solution to something. Let the diplomats be diplomats, let the fighters be the fighters, and realize that there is a disparity between the two, and the most apparent solution won't always be the best. Let players try to figure things out. Treat them like adults.

The Institute should have been Mad Science England. They should have been extorting resources from the Commonwealth openly and using their Synth army to protect their territory. Make them attack anyone with heavy weaponry (can't have plebs damaging the valuable synths), or anyone who speaks or writes against them, and you'd have a much better fit for the game's Revolutionary War themes. Also, it would give the Institute better motives for deploying infiltrator Synths and fighting the Minutemen. It would give them a better reason to focus on Synth development in the first place. It would even have made Piper seem like less of a joke by giving her a meaningful authoritarian power to speak truth to instead of just the weakling mayor character.

The Institute having mysterious internal structure and a hidden location was fine, but working so hard to keep its existence ambiguous in the beginning was dumb. It created numerous huge plot holes that could have been easily avoided.

There is a several GB mod for FOT that does just that, adding drivable M1A2s and vertibird CAS, but I never tried it and mods for tactics were always jankey as fuck.
