Aussie here looking to buy my first bolt action.

Have narrowed down the choices between a CZ 527 varmint or a HOWA 1500 varmint both with custom stocks in .223.

>CZ 527 has no picatinny rails, is only a 5 shot and costs $1349.
>HOWA 1500 has picatinny rails, is a 10 shot and costs $849.

Is the CZ 527 worth it for the quality etc. of the action? I plan on taking very good care of the rifle and don't mind the price hike. However if the HOWA isn't all that bad, it may be worth it to spend that extra cash on a scope.

I will probably use this rifle for target shooting and won't be moving around, however I may be able to use it for hunting one day.

The other option is to buy an excellent quality Finnish Nagant for $990, but the ammo is fuck-expensive here. I would love to get a .22 as soon as I can as well but I have no idea what is good.

Cheers /k/unts, and be thankful you don't have our gun laws.

>>34803486
Can you buy a ruger RPR or is that too scary? If not, buy it.
>>
>>34803512
I can actually but it's about $2000, so a bit out of my price range. Tacticool as fuck though.
>>
>>34803486
>first bolt rifle
>will inevitably fuck the chamber/barrel or both because of knowing nothing about cleaning regime.
>meme caliber
>light barrel because fuck barrel harmonics and barrel heat.
>litterally putting the cart before the horse

Just buy a godamn 30.06 or 308 budget rifle with a bull barrel and a good scope.
Then when you go through beginner mistakes and learnt the basics like building fucking ballistics table, just change the rifle.
>>
>>34803486
I have the Cz (and a Ziess conquest scope like the one in the stock photo) and I really like it. I've had for about a year and it hasn't given me any problems. It's a great shooter and everyone who shot it liked it as well. The only thing I don't like about is it's cumbersome to cycle the action if you have a large optic on it.

I can't say too much about the accuracy of the gun since I'm still fairly new to shooting but everything I read said the rifle is very accurate.

I was able to get mine for 780 usd (about 990 aud). I would try to see one in person before you buy due to the large price difference.
>>
>>34803722
.308 is double the price of .223 here for ammo. As I understand it varmint barrels are heavier than the standard barrel, so I don't know what you're on about.

>Barrel harmonics.
Barrel tuner.
>>
>>34803722
>will inevitably fuck the chamber/barrel or both because of knowing nothing about cleaning regime.
How the fuck would you even fuck it up? is this fuddlore? I hear fudds say this all the time, but I cannot even conceive of how you can fuck it up as long as you use a brass/aluminum/carbon fiber tools.
>>
>>34803722
>varmint
>light barrel
???
>>
>>34803486
Idk if a 223 bolt action is worth it. They're pretty expensive, and obviously very weak. You won't be able to kill anything bigger than a coyote with it. Idk how much guns and ammo cost where you live, but 22lr rifles are usually a lot cheaper, and aren't much less effective.
>>
>>34804749
.223 boltguns are very, very common in Australia. Almost everyone has one. They're good for killing most things here and .223 cheaper than everything else.
>>
>>34803486
lithgow la102 should cost about the same as the cz

>>34804749
cheap ammo and lots more range than a 22lr

makes them ideal as a first centrefire for foxes and paper

RUGER?!?!?!?

>Ruger recently discovered that all Mark IV™ pistols (including 22/45™ models) manufactured prior to June 1, 2017 have the potential to discharge unintentionally if the safety is not utilized correctly. In particular, if the trigger is pulled while the safety lever is midway between the "safe" and "fire" positions (that is, the safety is not fully engaged or fully disengaged), then the pistol may not fire when the trigger is pulled. However, if the trigger is released and the safety lever is then moved from the mid position to the "fire" position, the pistol may fire at that time.
>>
>>34805123
How good is the LA102 though?
>>
No youre wrong mate, get a savage weather warrior or a stainless t3. You'll thank me later.

Are you not allowed to get ar-15s there? 223 bolt actions are just too expensive for what they are. AR-15s are usually cheaper.
>>
>>34805455
No semi-automatic rifles allowed unless you have a category D license which is basically impossible to get. We can have revolving rifles and straight-pulls though.

Trust me if I could get an AR-15 I would get one.

Stopped reading.
Just leave the guns and other big boy toys to us guys in the USA and go play with NERF or something (if that's not banned) because let's face it none of you deserve guns unless you plan on taking your own life with them.
>>
Also Aussie, I've put a deposit on a CZ 452 which I should get in about a month when my pta clears. How fucked am I?
>>
>>34805526
why?

>>34805455
We had a national wide argument over reclassifying the Adler A110 entirely because it holds more than 5 shells. We will never get ARs m8ty.

Ever consider a Savage BTVS 93r17 or something along that line?
>>
>>34805962
I thought that was just for import? I got told in QLD you can still have a 7 round tube on Cat A.
>>
>>34805977

I'm not actually familiar with Savage, feel free to give me a run down though.
>>
>>34803486
Picked up a Howa in .223 for my first gun. Got it in a Hogue stock which I think is perfectly fine for .223. Mine will shoot sub-moa and theyre damn good for the price. Just use the extra you save on buying the Howa over the CZ on some good glass, you might upgrade in the future and get rid of the gun but good glass is something you can keep and use on other rifles.
>>
>>34805984
Not under the new NFA.
>>
>>34806050
Last I heard the new NFA hadn't been passed in QLD, is this wrong?

He's chosen .223 for a reason no use suggesting a caliber change unless you know what he's going to be doing with the gun.

The grapes are SO sour! Haha!
>>
>>34803486

I would consider Tikka T3 at that price range.

>>34806163
>Why do all the fudds I meet sing praise to this gun like the gospel?

Because it is a quality gun at price that could be higher.
>>
>>34806163
>Why do all the fudds I meet sing praise to this gun like the gospel?
It's not just fudds. I have a T3 in .308 with my 6920. Those are the first two rifles in my rack coming with me when I go out hunting or plinking. Depends on the game and range which one I pick up.

I have the T3x CTR in 308 and I can attest to its quality. Bolt is buttery smooth, trigger is fantastic from the factory, and if you're getting anything over half MOA, you need to work on your form.

You need to learn from your kiwi neighbors.

>can buy an AR15 right now if I walk into any gun store
>no gun register
>>
>>34810380
How?
>>
>>34810380
How would you do that though? You can't chip or scratch anything using a brass rod.
I guess if you use an amonia based cleaner and leave it in the barrel too long you can pit it, but you would have to specifically buy something ammonia based.
>>
>>34810750
That anon is spewing shit. The only thing you can really fuck up with is if you damage your crown. So don't clean from the front, if you push all the way through, remove your patch/jag/brush before bringing your rod back out of the rifle. And don't use shitty aluminum 3 piece rods. Get a good steel rod coated in nylon, that way you don't have to worry about it flexing inside and leaving trace metal deposits.
>>
>>34806100
>you have to shoot them in the brain with a minimum of .223
Kek. This is the opposite of the laws in the states. Youre supposed to avoid headshots so you dont accidentally blow the jaw off and .223 is considered too weak for deer.

>>34803486
Is that a boyd's stock? If so.

Fuck sporter rifles
I hear 7.62 Israeli Mausers are common in kanagarooland, just go with that or a Lithgow Enfield (if you don't mind .303)

I'm in USA and I'm buying my Israeli from a private seller tmrw, apparently they're great
>>
>>34811377
If you're looking for a light weight gun, it's pretty good. It would group right at 1 MOA unless I got it hot, then it was 2-3 MOA. And it doesn't take much to heat up, talking 3 round groups, not 5. I have also heard excellent things about the Ruger American though. Both are great hunting guns, but I wouldn't call the Patriot a target gun.
>>
>>34811416

And the scope? If I were to get either one what would be a good piece of glass?

>>34811505
The scope that's on it right now is a Primary arms 4-14x44 ffp scope. Mil dot. It's decent for what it is and is fairly inexpensive, but I wouldn't rely on it tracking perfectly and I wouldn't use it at full mag, after 10, clarity takes a prety big hit. I recently went to a Vortex PST Gen II 3-15 FFP. A little more money, but a big step up as far as glass goes. If you're on a budget, the diamondback and HST line from vortex get good reviews from.

On the low end of the price spectrum, I'd say go for the primary arms, you're not going to get a whole lot better at that price. For a mid level scope, I'd say go for the Vortex HS-T, and if you're looking to spend $1000+, I'd look at the PST Gen II and the Vortex Razor HD's. Out around the HD's price range, you could also start looking at Nightforce and other quality optics, but if you're not looking to spend a lot, then Vortex kinda owns the market for quality mid priced scopes.
>>
>>34811550
Israeli small arms are the best in the world, mainly because lots of them are just clones of or improvements to already incredible weapons
>galil, an improved AK
>jericho, an improved CZ
>israeli mauser, a mauser in a more common caliber
Face it wh*tey, jews make superior guns
