What is the best material to make a sword from?
I think it's diamonds because they're hard.
Diamonds are formed from pressure.
You need something that can handle pressure for a good sword.

>Sabres from Damascus, now in Syria, date back as far as 900 AD. Strong and sharp, they are made from a type of steel called wootz. Materials researcher Peter Paufler and his colleagues at Dresden University, Germany, have taken electron-microscope pictures of the swords and found that wootz has a microstructure of nano-metre-sized tubes, just like carbon nanotubes used in modern technologies for their lightweight strength.
Turns out it's super old tech.

The TL;DR is that steel checks all the boxes.

High strength, high hardness, high toughness, and it has the added bonus of being cheap.

This is also why gun barrels will continue to be made out of steel until the end of time.

Modern steel.
High quality repros like pic related are insanely tough.

The problem with titanium is that swords do require a certain heft to work properly in the cut.
Using a lighter material to make a bigger sword also isn't really much use. Swords have a certain maximum size, and it's not down to weight, but simply what can be considered reasonably usable.

In a nutshell, a titanium sword would be way more expensive, probably bulkier to make up for the reduced weight, and not actually perform any better.

>Steel is so damn old.

What we consider good steel today isn't terribly old, many forms of it didn't exist a century ago. What was good steel a century ago didn't really exist in Napoleon's time, and so on.

Age isn't necessarily something a material has against it either, it allows for maturity in the technologies of making it, handling it, and designing your items to make the most of the material's properties. We're getting pretty damn good at doing things with steel by now.

>>34801386
If you don't get sparks flying when using steel, then you're doing things wrong.

Perhaps something an Olympic fencer would notice, but for us common mortals the lighter smallswords are as good as weightless as it is.

>>34798988
Oh yes, that fucking thing. You know, for all the talk of nanotubes, even in the "short communication" itself (yep, not a full, proper article) it seems they didn't actually see any. They saw: "Some remnants (Fig. 1c) show evidence of incompletely dissolved cementite nanowires3, indicating that these wires could have been encapsulated and protected by the carbon nanotubes".

Could have... While I can't seem to find the bloody reply at the moment, others have suggested alternative causes for the structures observed.

Even graver an issue IMO is that the article simply takes the assumption of the superb properties of these steels for granted. What little data I've found on it suggests otherwise, showing us steels that are not terribly hard, and yet quite brittle. By assuming that these were superlative steels we also easily fall into the trap of thinking that since the steel was exceptional, the presence of the nanotubes is also exceptional. Has anyone ever bothered to check for them elsewhere?

A hole the authors manage not to trip , but which basically everyone reporting on their findings do, is to assume that the nanotubes would in some was be the cause of the assumed superior qualities of the steel. In reality their presence could just as easily be harmful, and no matter what significant amounts of them would do, they may only be present in trace quantities, limiting their impact to either solely to the indirect, or nothing.
