You can shorten it a little, but the overall length must remain at least 26 inches, and the barrel length at least 16 inches, as per the US National Firearms Act of 1934.
As long as you don't go below those limits, it's a legal firearm.
If you go below it, you'll need a tax-paid registration from the BATFE, which will run you about $200 and require a background check.

Agreed. You can't store the gun in the actual truck and not expect it to get stolen. It's gotta be stored in the home, and then carried to the truck when you get in.
