ITT- Favourite military aircraft
The de Havilland Mosquito was a multi role plane used by the Brits in WW2. It was adapted to fill many different roles, the most badass of which being intrusion and night fighting. I'm lazy and bad at writing so here's a bit about it I found online.
1/???
One of the lesser known uses of the De Havilland Mosuito, was the deep penetration attacks on German night fighters, as they were returning to base, after a night of attacking our bomber forces.
Single RCAF Mosquitos, with their two man crew ( Pilot and Navigator/ radar operator ) were sent as far as Poland, to lay in wait for the night fighters to land, at their supposedly secure airfields.
The intruders were flying in the dead of night, at VERY low altitude ( 50 to 100 feet above the ground ) and at about 300 mph, all the way to the target airfield. Once they were close by, they cut speed to just above idle, and slowly made a race track pattern, 5 to 10 miles away from the German base.
As the Mosquito was hugging the ground, the German radar couldn't see them, as they were lost in the "ground clutter " on the radar screens.
As the night fighter lined up to land, the base control would flick the landing lights on and off, to give the incoming aircraft a momentary glimpse of the runway's location. This also alerted the Intruder crew to come round and follow the German plane on it's approach slope. The perfect situation was for the Intruder to fire, just as the German plane was landing. By doing that, the Intruders knew that their target was just about 100 percent "dead meat ". As soon as the German aircraft was hit and had crashed, the Mosquito pilot firewalled the throttles, and got out of the area, at 100 feet and 410 mph, the Mosquito's flat out , sea level top speed.
To the target and home again, could be up to six hours in the air, and at no point could they relax, except when they put flaps and wheels down, as they approached their base in the UK.
2/2
A VERY dangerous game of cat and mouse, at the very farthest range of the aircraft's fuel capacity, and all ways, on the darkest nights. Moon periods were no good for Intruders, as they were too easy to see, even though they were painted " charcoal flat black ".
The Mosquito was the one Allied aircraft that could do "just about anything " and it was built in about 20 different types, from fighter, fighter bomber, ground attack, maritime shipping attacker, high altitude photo recce ( above fourty thousand feet with a pressurized cockpit ) , and of course, the ultra long range night intruder. It could and did, dog fight with German fighters , while carrying a 2000 pound bomb load ( four 500 pounders ) . With extra slipper tanks, it could fly from Britain to Italy, non stop, refuel, to go on and do Intruder missions on the east side of the Reich, and go back to Italy, to re-arm and re-fuel.
617sqn were known to "borrow" one or two for target marking purposes. That said, Leonard Cheshire had a P.51 gifted which saw very interesting service.

Linke Hoffman WW1 "stealth" bomber
The ones sent out with auto-loading 57mm cannons to go u-boat hunting struck me as rather interesting.
You can actually buy new ones.
>>34782414
Highball.

Hey kid. Wanna buy some Mosquitos?

seems like a tall tale if you consider the range and what that does to range when going full throttle

Don't mind me - best fighter coming through
Ju-388
-
"The Junkers Ju 388 Störtebeker was a World War II German Luftwaffe multi-role aircraft based on the Ju 88 airframe by way of the Ju 188. It differed from its predecessors in being intended for high altitude operation, with design features such as a pressurized cockpit for its crew. The Ju 388 was introduced very late in the war, and production problems along with the deteriorating war conditions meant that few were built."

>seems like a tall tale if you consider the range and what that does to range when going full throttle
I expect that was flat out full throttle just to get away from the airbase that was probably scrambling everything on the ground at that moment.
once they'd made a dash for safety, I'm sure they throttled back for the long flight home.
Heavy fighters are awesome
>>34787177
they are.
>>34787177
>>34788206
From Wikipedia: "With the exception of theLockheed P-38 Lightningand thede Havilland Mosquito, heavy fighters largely failed in their intended roles during World WarII, as they could not outmaneuver the more conventional, single-engined fighters."
What went wrong? Why did those two succeed where others failed?

>me410
Anon I would suck your dick, homo or no homo
>>34788250
From what I know, it's because the designers approached them with a single engine fighter mind set, if that makes sense. They used features that pulled all the best features of both single and twin engine fighters
>>34788254
t-thanks
>>34788294
I love the fact that the ta had two boost systems, for high and low alt
>>34788275
So they designed them as more of an upsized fighter, rather than taking a light bomber or something and downsizing/converting it?
>>34788250
>heavy fighter
Excuse me but the Mosquito was an unarmed bomber first.
Bits and bobs were added later.
>>34788350
That seems to have been the philosophy behind them. History has aptly demonstrated what happens when twin engine aircraft are pressed into fighter roles(which they haven't been designed for)
>>34788367
Which makes this whole idea that the Mosquito worked where other seemingly similar planes didn't even more confusing.
>>34788275
Mosquito is a bomber.
>single engine fighter mind set
Wind your redneck in.
>>34788396
I think it's due to the fact that it was made from materials that where light as possible. Also, how many well performing fighters had turrets?
>>34788408
The whole idea of rapping the lightest frame around the most powerful engines and leaving the turrets seems to lean towards a fighter philosophy to me, but I'm not claming to be a expert.(also not a red neck)
>>34788396
Task a P-38 with delivering one of these through a specific window in Berlin and I'd be impressed. ;)

I adore this little 'heavy fighter' and very few people know about it. Beautiful plane with 4 x 20mm Hispano's in 1938. How differently things may have gone if they'd got a few more squadrons of these things off the deck. (The Brits did have 3 squadrons with them, but no more.)

>>34788469
It is indeed a beautiful plane anon. Are you also familiar with the welkin? High altitude fighter built on similar lines but with glider like wings
>>34788445
Aluminium was strategically important so that was right out as a material. Merlins ditto but were scrounged.
Knowledge was in excess hence some interesting solutions were to be had.
Pic could have escorted bombers to Berlin in 1941. It was passed over for the obvious toys.
>>34788524
I want to say it's a typhoon, but the radiator looks slightly different. Could it be a fire fly?
>>34788445
Or it would lead to the fast bomber principle, which had been around for ages at that point. Why carry turrets when you're faster than any fighter.
>>34782414
I know it's more of a propaganda tool than anything, but I always fancied the JU87
>>34788544
Never mind, the 8 machine guns tells me it's a typhoon
>>34788544
It's in the file name...
>>34788524
The m20 was designed to be quick and cheap to build, an emergency fighter, it sure as hell wasn't going to be escorting bombers to Berlin.
>>34788563
The shnell bomber concept always made me laugh, it was a German idea, but the best was English
>>34788544

Which was an "emergency fighter" which had interesting capabilities.

>>34788600
Sorry, no, it didn't.
It may have had superior range to the hurricane and spitfire, but by 1941 8 .303's and a top speed of 333mph weren't going to cut it for escort work.
>>34788672
Oh of course overlapping fields of fire works better.
Whatever.
>>34788709
why is the wing off
>>34788709
What are you attempting to imply? Rifle calibre guns on aircraft were becoming obsolete before the second world war.
>>34788731
I think maybe it was hit by a shell or something.
>>34788758
did it crash?
>>34783138

I have loved Tintin all my life. I have a big temple of the sun poster, collection of the old "cigarette cards" and a bunch of the books.
A place in France I often go is this really out of the way museum that sells most pieces. You're welcome to go look around just for pleasure or to purchase something. They have original release tintins. Fantastic stuff there.
I have all of the books and extras on PDF on my mega to read at work. The bbc audio books are good too.
Honestly I'm just glad that someone recognised the reference I was making.
>>34788396
It didn't really. It found success as a night fighter, which is an entirely different beast. It was not designed as a fighter and any attempt to treat it as one, heavy or not, would had been a dismal failure.

They were effective early war in delivering bombs accurately. Performance wise, against pre-war fighters they were ok but soon was overtaken by newer fighters. On the Eastern Front, they soldiered on though with heavy casualties.
Shame, Poland actually had a decent airforce before the war started. This was probably the best medium bomber of the war.
>>34782414
I like the civil-registered BOAC versions of the Mosquito that flew runs to neutral Sweden.
If you like plastic models an incredible kit that used to be somewhat cheap is the Monogram 1/48 scale kit. Just reading about all of the versions in the instructions is pretty amazing.
I understand Mosquitos didn't age so well, and in the warmer tropics they tended to delam. Still an incredible plane.
I've stood right on the street in Aarhuse Denmark where the RAF Mosquitos bombed the gestapo headquarters with a relative of mine who had been in the danish Resistance told me via my mother as a translator, what happened.
Kinda amazing how much success the Mosquito had, and how little the Me-210/410 did.
what about the pink spitfires?
Single-engined pleb gtfo
>>34792149
Pink was the same as PRU Blue in that it was used to try to hide something armed only with cameras.
Other things have worn that colour.
>>34788469
It was queueing for the obvious engine. I'd like to have seen more from it.
From the war? He 162.
On the topic of emergency fighters like the 162 and the Miles, I've got an interesting question. Could a serviceable mid or late war fighter have been built by Germany using pistol engines not used for 109 or 190 production? Could they have built a reasonable fighter on a Jumo 211 or Rhone 14M?

Always wondered why Germany never had heavy bombers in WWII when they built big shit in WWI - the Riesenflugzeug were bigger than anything the Luftwaffe used
>>34788469
Too bad their engines weren't up to par. Could have been a real world beater.
>>34788600
Absolutely no.
Real it's the boring old B-29 because of the cockpit windows and it's size.
Almost real is pic related.
WWII, anyway
>>34799166
They decided to focus on tactical bombing before the war, when they realized having heavy strategic bombers is important they were already on the defense in terms of the air war, so the projects were stopped to concentrate on fighter production.
