What I want to know is why we didn't take a gander at what the Italians were doing and pull an American BM59 instead of going down the T44 route.

Or not giving Harvey's rifle the fuck you and let him continue to tinker with it because that thing was actually way lighter than the Garand and was apparently a bit simpler.

Because non-conformity is the most American thing of all.

We are special, we have more rights, more liberties, more freedom in a personal and also socio-economic sense and more weapons than any other society in human history.

Our rights to speak and question our government stand above the legal authority of that goverment. Our rights to arm ourselves and forcibly resist our government stand above the authority of that goverment. DC does not grant us our rights, as is the case in the rest of the world, we remind DC that our homes are full of guns and tell DC where it is and is not allowed to to intrude.

American's are special snowflakes because we are far more individualistic than any other society. Being different is not some scandalous thing here, it is the norm. I will drink coffee in the middle of the night, I will drive miles, walk yards, measure inches, carry pounds, own guns, call the president an orange ape, the congress corrupt shitheads, call for the dismantling and imprisonment of the intelligence apparatus, eat hamburgers and play soccer. And there is nothing anyone can do about it, because I am an American and I am more free from legal chains than anyone else on earth.

Americans are special snowflakes because America is special. Being an American makes you individually special by association. Conformism is not our game and it is the rest of the world that just doesn't get it. It's that very liberty and "special snowflake" lack of restriction in both the personal and economic sense that has made america the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth. We don't need government approval to address a problem we just solve it, and hopefully create more wealth in the process.
>>
>>34780618
This.

And this is exactly why so much of the world 'hates'* us.

>*by hate I mean they are incredibly jelly and fox and the grape-ish about our inalienable rights. To the point that they feel the need to constantly harp on the negatives of such rights (and there are negatives, like with anything) because they are so upset about the positives to the people from those rights.

What it came down to between the FAL and M14 was tooling. For some reason, the Army Ordnance Board thought that the M1 Garand's tooling, with some modifications, could be repurposed to produce the M14. That turned out to be impossible.

>>34779858
what I'm curious about is why didn't the UK use the EM-2, I know churchill cancelled it technically, but couldn't they have used it as something along the lines of the M1 carbine? (for tank or vehicle drivers)? I imagine the US/NATO would be a little less critical of a gun being in such an application.

also: why didn't anyone try with a lighter-load 7.62, designed with "controlled select fire" in mind, did not all FAL's, G3's or M14's have gas-adjustment systems?

Because the military, particularly its acquisitions, has always been corrupt as fuck. People act like the absolute hemorrhaging of money in recent years on H&K gimmicks that perform the same or worse to what they are replacing is a new thing, but the story behind the M14 is just as sketchy. The infantry board may as well have been communist plants for all the good they did America.

BOY ANON I WONDER
>>
>>34779858
Oh boy don't even start this thing.

British and Belgians dropped .280 because they thought that it would be a compromise - they drop their cartridge, Americans adopt FAL. And the worst is that back in the 30's they wanted to adopt .276 like it was nothing, but somehow, 2 decades later they were dead-set on .30 caliber - forget it though, the most outrageous thing is that they've developed a new cartridge all together. While the idea of shortening .30-06 had its merit, that cartridge already existed - 7.5 French has roughly the same ballistics as .308 while being only very slightly longer(still much shorter than .30-06), but no, gonna adopt yet another cartridge.

It was a LOT simpler.

The '14 never really measured up, only TRW managed to work all the bugs out of the manufacturing processes, and deliver rifles that met spec, even then it was a rather flawed design.

All in all U.S. mall arms development of the era was focused on the '14 being the "one to rule them all", then the SPIW/SALVO.
Neither really worked out, though the SPIW is actually fascinating to study, instead of the facepalming nonsense one finds in the '14's program.

They fucked up, (as usual because it's the government) we ruined small arms development for decades, and now we have shit. You need to accept that we dropped the ball, hell, we dropped the ball with the .30-06 which led to the Garand being adopted which led to the M14.

Friendly reminder that the military-issue .30-06 is deliberately underpowered so the shitty eight-round semi-auto rifle we adopted didn't beat itself apart. We should've went with the Johnson chambered in .276 Pedersen.

Why the FUCK did we have to adopt that POS the M14?
The FAL has potential to be accurized and STAY that way.
The fucking M14 doesn't.
The FAL doesn't have nearly as awful a time in muddy wet or sandy conditions as the M14 does.
It's more modular, has a better system for magazines, and honestly no more expensive to make than the M14/Garand

FUCK.
And we didn't even fix the shit the garland needed fixed, nor did we make it cheaper and more economical.

The M14 was more accurate than the FAL and baseline accuracy stays the same unless you do stupid civilian things like bedding the action to the stock (never done in a real military application)

Kalashnikov himself admitted in his correspondence with Edward Ezell that he copped the rotating bolt and cam track from the Garand and incorporated it into his sealed AK system because he knew how reliable it was.

We also did fix quite a few things over the garand. The White self adjusting short stroke piston system on the M14 was a masterstroke that is still replicated today.

Magazines were actually worse on metric FALs. if the tiny front locking tab bends in you run the risk of completely unreliable feeding and magdrops while firing. The M14 had a solid welded on plate for this and the brits fixed this design flaw with L1A1 mags.

The M14 was cheaper to make in America because production lines, forges, tools and dies were already streamlined into making garand type rifles.

BUT...

As government grows and individual liberties shrink, as central power increases and regulations abound, this country is slowly killing itself from the inside. Meanwhile, we are inviting in the worst the world has to offer (although to a lesser extent than other countries) because they're breeding at a rate we can't keep up with and we've convinced ourselves that people with no connection to our culture are our future.

The natives of the past couldn't stop us when we conquered this land and made it into the greatest country on Earth. Now we are allowing ourselves to be conquered. We are losing our culture and our way of life. I only hope thay those that conquer us will eventually see the beauty of what this country once stood for and make something like it:

>>34784076
>also: why didn't anyone try with a lighter-load 7.62, designed with "controlled select fire" in mind
Part of the idea of 7.62 was to simplify supply lines, get rid of SMGs, rifles and the BAR and replace them with them all with a single, select fire rifle and have a unified ammo type for everything smaller than the M2. Having 2 types of ammo would have run directly contrary to this idea.
