do you think a modern military could be effective with only side by side 12g smooth bore double barrel shotguns for small arms? full variety of ammo is available and even barrel inserts for other calibers.
what do you think would be the absolute limit on the oldest firearm that could be issued as a service rifle and still be effective in the field?

The oldest weapon that could still be fielded and be effective? Probably the M1 Garand.
Remember, the biggest innovation in small arms was not the self-contained metallic cartridge, it was the development of smokeless powder.

i expected an answer like this from most people. Selfloading WW2 and maybe even the rarer ww1 ones could probably still be effective.
