I picked up smoking on my first deployment. I always turned people down until we went on our first patrol into a nearby village in search of a spotter. When we got back, or tried it and noticed how quickly it put me at ease. Coughed like a little bitch too, everyone gave me a lot of shit.

Kept it up. Then I discovered dip and fuck me, I lived for that buzz. Cool as a God damned cucumber anytime we were out in the backyard.

Drop it entirely when I got out and back state side.

As a regular smoker I guess I can offer my input. Smoking helps you deal with stressful situations better and makes you more focused since it's a stimulant.

It also makes you feel happy and at least from my experience can cure depression so it might of had an effect at reducing the prevalence of PTSD.

All you smoker's need to check out Swedish Snus. Probably the least harmful natural tobacco product in the history of the world. Bonus points because you can do it anywhere and no one will know. Make sure you only use SWEDISH snus. the American made shit is chemical laden shit like every other US tobacco product.
