Suggestions on which gun to buy or suggestions in general?
If for hunting: remington 770s are nice and come in a bunch of different calibers, i have a .270 but if I had a choice (it was present when i was young) i'd get it in .30-30.
If for plinking: a .22lr single shot will kill cans as well as any other. Get the cheapest you can buy.
If for home defense: get an ar or a handgun, bolt action is not your best option there.
My overall suggestion to you is to look at semi autos or my fav - the henry lever actions. Pic related is a Big Boy, and is my all around favorite gun to carry innawoods. I've got one in .30-30 (they make a Golden Boy in .22lr also that is good for small game and plinking.)

Mosin Nagants aren't as cheap as they used to be ($69.99 at surplus was the lowest i've ever seen in person) but they are inexpensive to feed and have been putting holes in living and non living targets for over a century.
Here's a picture of one doing it's mating dance.

Savage arms makes quite a few cheap bolt actions, in quite a few calibers. Look at the "axis". A yugo Mauser is in the similar price range, around 300 bucks. Nuggets are no longer cheap, spend the extra 50 bucks and at least get a Mauser.
.22s are also a cheap option, you can play Olympic shooter and really get good at shooting with a .22 bolt action.
The days of milsurp being a good option as a cheap shooter are gone forever. Your best bet is a Savage Axis II or Ruger American Rifle. Both can be had in the $300-400 range.

I like my Mossberg MVP in .308; I can use AR-10 mags, M14 mags, and IIRC FAL mags. They make them in 556 too with AR mags. It's been a great rifle. I replaced the blister mounts with a solid rail; I think it helped noticeably with patterns.

If you're spending that much definitely get a SMLE, if you don't mind doshing out a little for .303. I saw one in .30-06 but I don't know how common they are. Other good choices are Mauser 98 for something also pricey but worth it, and a nugget if you want something cheap that shoots cheap and will mostly hit what you're aiming at.

Home defense is for pistols or shotguns if you hate your stereo/tv/wall photos
