Does anyone know how the war on ISIS in the Philippines is being conducted? Particularly in the jungle, considering how fucked up it can be.
>>
>>34746021
Because ISIS is the new Khmer Rouge, with Philippines acting as Vietnam in this case.
>>
>>34746082
Well, there is a difference in that it's Filipino forces fighting ISIS, not foreign forces that had no knowledge of the land as was the case in Vietnam.

Right now the bulk of the fighting is contained to the southern islands, particularly Mindanao (though some shit pops off on some of the smaller islands regularly). ISIS in the Philippines consists mainly of pre-existing Islamic Secessionist groups pledging loyalty to the Islamic State, though according to reports of some of the dead in Marawi there are a couple foreign jihadists that have come over (probably in a training capacity). The situation is further complicated because certain groups such as the MNLF are still running around and not acknowledging the Maute/ISIS group while still waging war against the government. Also the NPA gommies still raise hell from time to time.

As for how the war is conducted, it usually involves PH military sweeps through contested areas with the big clashes coming when every once in a while some Islamic group or another tries to take a major city. A few years ago it was Zamboanga, now its Marawi. The PH military/Law Enforcement has had mixed results in the war, they successfully fucked up the muzzies trying to take Zamboanga but during the same time there was a major ambush against a special Police unit that killed about 40 guys. Now in Marawi ISIS/Maute have gotten a lot more aggressive so its a lot of urban combat with the PH military slowly making inroads. Hopefully this provides some valuable combat experience for Philippine security forces for future confrontations.

Also to note is that the PH military finally seems to be updating some of its equipment, albeit very slowly. So you have a nice blend of 'Nam era stuff showing up in combat, like this Huey.

It's just the same fighting that's been going on there since forever really. They fought the other locals, they fought the Spanish, the fought the Americans, and now they're back to fighting their neighbours again. They probably only started calling themselves ISIS after someone finally bothered to google MILF.

Probably not. I guess you could try to enlist in the PH military but that would more than likely require PH citizenship and the like. I guess you could try getting in with one of the pro-gov't paramilitary/militia groups, but that's a crapshoot at best. Also, I mean no offence but if you're white you're going to stick out like a sore thumb down there.

Yes to some degree, except this doesn't involve two separate countries. Mindanao is a part of the Philippines, and the murderboner extremists were for the most part ALREADY THERE, they just used to call themselves different names before pledging themselves to ISIS. There are a handful of foreign jihadists that can over, most of the fighters in Marawi are from the Abu Sayyaf and Maute groups.

Alright downloaded some more pics from the fighting. Its a bit confusing since the Filipino security forces comprise of a number of organizations which can usually be denoted by differing camo. If you see this purple-ish stuff that's more than likely PNP SAF (Philippine National Police Special Action Force). These guys are a police counter-terror/hostage rescue unit that functions nation-wide. They're supposed to be pretty good, but this happened somewhat recently
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamasapano_clash
44 SAF were killed in an ambush, though they did succeed in positively ID'ing and killing a terrorist leader. Some blame poor cooperation with the army, but their reputation suffered. Still, they show up whenever clashes with muzzies/commies happen.

>Duterte's said he's been really iffy about the US
He has, but there has been a longstanding history of cooperation between US/PH military forces that continues to last. A few months ago the US donated some gear to PH security forces, mostly small arms alongside some rigid inflatable boats. China followed up later with small arms of their own, Chinese AR clones with a few SVD derivatives plus a few other things. So right now there's arms from both the US and China coming in, not really too bad of a thing imo because the AFP needs modern gear.

>I doubt the Philippines would hire private contractors either
I agree, right now the security is probably real tight around these areas, especially for foreigners.
>Do we still train Green Berets up North
I believe Duterte put a stop to that, however I guess that wasn't entirely true because Green Berets showed up at Marawi.
>>34751380
Based on these guys camo/gear, pretty sure they're some kinda PH SOF. Plus the fact that their patches are blurred for some odd reason.

They still are, however President Duterte is very, very friendly to the Chinese and has been trying very hard to re-orient the Philippines to a more pro-China stance. Hence why China is willing to give arms to Flipland as a sign of goodwill. This had already been happening to some degree, I saw some Type 56 derivative in 5.56 used by cops when I was in Manila last year.

Its strange going through thread and seeing plates set up with mags double stacked on the front of a rig. Isn't prone your bestest friend when bush shooting?

When I do use a PC in woodland(even urban) I have 2 alice mag pouches on the sides, a SAW pouch, and an old 2 quart canteen opposite the saw pouch. A condor tnt pouch in the middle of the two alice pouches. All this is riding near my nips so middle of the PC

All for at least 15 mags as the two pouches upfront can hold 4 mags each (no idea where I got them if someone can help)

On ops I hava a RothCo advanced recon buttpack that I set up with plastic buckles to attach and reattach easily.

That's how I would set the SOPC as.

Arab explorers and merchants have been a thing in the far east since ancient roman times if not further so they have had a presence there and then when Islam came along it spread fast since the Arabs basically had centries old highways and sea lanes to China and beyond.

>Does anyone know how the war on ISIS in the Philippines is being conducted? Particularly in the jungle, considering how fucked up it can be.
You can't see shit since there's heavily dense foliage, shrubs, trees and sometimes foxholes where the insurgent can easily spot where you're firing from and take potshots in your direction. If they see muzzle flashes, concussion from bushes/shrubs/leaves or even just sound and smoke they're good enough shots to hit someone.

They also fire homemade/smuggled RPGs on tree crowns, the splinters won't kill dudes but it will fuck them up enough to stop firing. The thicker the tree, the better and they also do it with bamboo as long as they're clumped together. Medium sized trees just fall, sometimes it will hurt someone but I haven't heard someone getting killed over trees falling.

Then they also leave IEDs that could tear off your foot when you're in pursuit, newfags and boots stay behind while they let NCOs and the more experienced guys disarm and throw it away with a grenade. They leave their wounded and dead while they hide in a small town of some other ragtag secessionist group.

One thing I learned when I was a newfag LT was to never drink or take water from rivers, ponds and streams since they spike it with rat poison and other nasty shit.

Do this for 30+ years and then suddenly we're now fighting Fallujah 2.0. with even the most SNCOs never experienced urban warfare or only did photo-ops cross-training with the Americans/Brits.

The are meant to work right up next to armor and force a hot jet of high pressure plasma into it, this is only hot, concentrated and fast enough for a couple centimeters to punch through

by forcing it to detonate prematurely on anything from logs to thick bundles of cardboard instead of concentrating all that into a single spot in the armor it spreads it out so it kind of sheets over it instead of punching a hole into it.

Just Google standoff armor, I'm day drinking and can't be arsed to do anything but doodle a diagram

PMA (Batch '09) and then RMAS before commissioning.
>>
>>34753604
I should add that more advanced anti armor is able to bypass this and even with basic bitch RPG2s this isn't effective a lot of the time and will very likely compromise the plate section if it did work.

But it saves some lives and thats good enough

>I was always under the assumption that old Spain being the colonizer there would have wiped out any competition or assimilated it with Catholicism.

Spain held the Philippines in a loose grip. Up until the late 1700s, Spanish Philippines was basically "Areas directly controlled by Spain + areas controlled by converted tribes + areas held by allied tribes."

The problem is it wasn't like South America at all. The locals know steel and gunpowder. Furthermore Spain can't afford to send large numbers of their dudes all the bloody way to the Philippines for quite a long time. So basically their "conquest" of the islands involved more diplomacy and conversion, with Spain playing local tribal politics as "the new powerful tribe in the block." They basically went to the weaker tribes, told them that they will protect them versus the bigger tribes and kingdoms in the Islands, in return for recognizing the Spanish king as their lord and converting to Christianity. Hell they didn't get to lose anything, the local chieftains actually became minor Spanish nobility (the Principalia) in the Philippine colonies. They pretty much rinsed and repeated this process around the central and southern bits of the Philippine islands, until they had enough flips to use versus the independent powerful Flips, leading to the fall or subjugation of powerful Kingdoms in Northern Philippines like Manila, Tondo, and the Kapampangan State.

Problem was with the Southern Muslims was that they had powerful allies from Borneo all the way to what is now Indonesia. With Spain basically using local Flip resources to fight other Flips, they were pretty much at a deadlock with the Southern Muslims, who managed to be independent.

Compound to this is the fact that Spain turtles up whenever China or Japan threatened the Philippines. Which happened during the 1590s, and 1640s.
