lastly, a few weeks after the incident. people will want to follow that thing called the constitution again. which means states appointing new senators and snap elections for house reps. then probably want to elect a civilian president too. though this is now your chance to hold a constitutional convention and alter the constitution. you can also have your Generalissimo run for president and likely win. since he is already in charge and the money and the people will want that stability.

The US military is made up four (or five if you include national guard) separate groups at the moment, each with their own chain of command. Before a coup can even be thought about, at least one of those groups need to get the majority of its leadership on board with the idea. After that, they need to get at least one if not two of the other group's leadership to also be on board with the idea. Only then can you even think about trying and it would be bound to fail if just a handful of elected officials escape.

Here is why coups succeed in third world countries, they have small militaries often comprising of only one chain of command. The less people you have to convince the easier it is and the less chances there could be a leak of information.

Are you including the President and the executive branch as part of the military? Because the President is technically the Commander-In-Chief. Either way, the conspirators would have to straight up kill all 535 members of Congress (to ensure they cannot claim authority via the 25th Amendment) and all the executive cabinet secretaries. However, such a thing would only serve to piss everyone off and Governors themselves would just appoint replacements, who could then claim authority via the 25th Amendment. At this point the conspirators would have to kill all nine SCOTUS Justices and all Justices within the Federal court system, to ensure that the newly appointed legislators cannot bring their claim into a court. And since you've effectively decapitated the US government, it would be very easy for individual states to arm themselves (such as through drafts) and just occupy Federal places (especially if individual generals refuse orders). Then a civil war would begin and whatever happens after would require a reconstructed US Federal government no matter what.
