If I asked a gunsmith to put dovetail iron sights on a modern hunting rifle like pic related, would he think that I am a retard?
>>
>>34724166
If he does, he won't say anything because that would be a lost customer. Are you willing to possibly be secretly judged by a gunsmith?
>>
>>34724166
no.

he couldn't give a shit. Probably one of the more reasonable request he has received. he wants money.
>>
I wouldn't think so, you're not trying to get an eagle engraved on it or anything stupid like that.

You're not a big fan of optics?
>>
>>34724166
There are plenty of traditional hunting rifles that come standard with iron sights. Look for "Africa", "Safari", "Alaska" in the model name. Mostly .375 H&H and larger

>>
>>34724166
I'd be happy if someone asked me to do that because it's not retarded and it's really fucking easy. Most people are like:

"lol, can u make this full auto?"

"I completely disassembled this gun for no reason and now I don't know how to put it back together"

"Can you fix the timing on this old worthless piece of shit revolver? Oh, nevermind. I don't want to pay that much"
>>
>>34724361
How much would it cost? Not OP, but would also like a Ruger American with irons.
>>
>>34724245
Why are iron sights now a "option" instead of a standard? Hell I wouldn't not buy a rifle if it doesnt have them.
>>
>>34724475
I would charge 55 to 85 dollars plus the cost of the sights. Cutting a dovetail with a milling machine would only take 10 minutes.
>>
>>34724166
Yes and he'd be right.

If you want open sights get a short barreled gun in an appropriate caliber.

Open sights on a 16" 30-30? Brilliant.
Open sights on a 24" .308? Retarded.

I'm in the same boat. Optics are really overrated, considering the bulk and complexity they add to the rifle. Irons are almost as good, but so much simpler.

I wish more mfgs would put them on rifles other than their 5lb .416 Rigby "guide" model. Some people enjoy plinking in chamberings that aren't $5 a round.
>>
>>34724502
Non meme answer? Because they suck shit.

A guy with optics and very little trigger time can shoot as well as an experienced shooter with irons past 100-150 yards.
>>
>>34724569
Most iron suck, though. Peep sight is where it's at.

>fix the timing on this old worthless piece of shit revolver

Do all revolvers have "adjustable" timing?

I have a Ruger Security Six that's in decent shape, seems to function fine. but it has a feint drag line around the cylinder where I guess the the locking lever or the pawl is touching when its not supposed to?

does that mean it needs timing adjusted?
>>
>>34724585
>never learned how to shoot without optics
>>
>>34724585
So do irons suck or do inexperienced shooters suck?
>>
>>34724663
>inexperienced shooters suck
is the answer

old timers and military vets are pretty accurate with irons out to 300yds give or take
>>
>>34724603
Correct, certainly a little better than Patridge. Both are pretty effective in their own respects. But that extra bit of sight radius really does it.
>>
>>34724654
Revolvers don't have adjustable timing. When the timing is fucked on a cheap revolver, the gun is spare parts because the repair is worth more than the gun.

>does that mean it needs timing adjusted?
No, that's normal.
>>
>>34724654
Yeah, that just happens. You can have the cylinder blued and that line will go away for a little while. If it's a gun you use fairly often, just don't worry about it.
>>
>>34724654
That's entirely normal. Go look at one of Hickok's videos where he shows off his Model 29 that he got back in the 70s. It has a fairly deep line and tens of thousands of rounds through it, but it still works flawlessly.
>>
Most guys looking to hunt with open sight bolt guns are hunting big nasty animals at 100 yards or less. For that, a big bullet and the ability to keep calm are more important than long range accuracy. The mfgs know their market in this, thats why you can plenty of 375H&Hs and bigger with open sights. It simply doesnt make sense on a 308 or smaller
>>
>>34724603
>>34724690
Most hunters would only want dovetails mounted as a backup in case their scope fails or something. I don't think a peep sight would be useful in this role considering the rear it would block the scope. With dovetails you would be able to keep them on the rifle as a backup while using the scope

but i don't shoot it that often. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't ignoring a maintenance issue or something, i'm kinda new to revolvers. but this is fun to shoot.
>>
Should be easy enough to do yourself OP, just watch a few youtube vids and don't Bubba it up.
>>
>>34724809
Fair point.

Patrdige style sights are underrated. On a decent quality Kalashnikov, 400-500yd hits on torso's is pretty doable.

Most medium game shots are <200yds. With a bolt action rifle and irons, you should be able to take most game, with a fair margin for a humane shot.

Short of varmint hunting, they're pretty viable for most situations.
>>
>>34724166
Make sure they're night sights and you get a suppressor for covert ops hunting.
>>
>>34725542
>not using a crossbow for this

It's like you don't even want to be silent.
>>
>>34724166
"hey gunsmith can I pay you money so you can make it that I can actually aim my rifle?" this is about the most reasonable request you can make of a gunsmith, and most gunsmiths are old anyway and will appreciate somebody using irons "like back in mah day"
>>
>>34724658
>>34724663
>>34724679

There is no debate, guys. Optics are better. A red dot or reflex sight is faster than irons. A magnified optic is more precise than irons.

Sometimes things catch on because they're better.
>>

You don't do shit. Professional hunters don't use irons unless it's close range dangerous game. Look at Steve Rinella. He spends weeks in awful conditions tracking game and guess what? Just uses a scope.

Remind me which military units are using only iron sights.
>>
>>34724502
Because most bolt action rifles will immediately get a tasco/bushnell/Simmons scope slapped on them and be used for hunting. The extra time and money needed to put irons on a rifle is better spent drilling and tapping the barrel instead.

The Ruger scout is pretty nice too. You can put the scope on in the normal rear position but you have to remove the rear iron sight to do so, but with the picatinny rail I'm sure there's some option for a forward mounted rear iron.

Fixing thy cylinder stops doesn't sound to terribly difficult but re-lining barrels is kind of a pain on revolvers. That's an hour or two on a lathe. Depending on how the revolver is built, it might not even be possible to reline it. I'd say that's 200 bucks or more depending.
>>
>>34728882
I'm a machinist myself, learned on old 50's era engine lathes and bridgeports, but I don't own any machines myself.

You can buy .22lr barrel liners from brownells for 40 bucks. You just have to drill out the barrel to the diameter of the liner and solder or loctite that shit in. The tricky part is just getting that barrel perfectly centered on the lathe. 4 jaw chuck + dial indicator would be the best way.
>>
>>34727808

She qt
>>
>>34724475
Depends on a few factors, but generally with a sporter barrel you have to:
>mill a dovetail for the rear sight
~10 minutes' worth of work
>either braze or silver-solder the front ramp on
This is the hard(ish) part, as both processes can fuck the finish up to the point the entire barrel needs to be refinished to be "right" and 100% requires stripping any paint-on finish to adhere properly.

Rarely is a sporter barrel thick enough to dovetail in a front sight.

Without refinishing you're looking at between $50 and $80 in labor plus the cost of the sights, which range from $30 to over $200 depending on the style and brand you want.
>>
>>34729010
sounds like a plan, but I have no means to do that kind of work.
>>
>>34727782
Because it's a rifle designed for medium to long range (over 250 yards), and even an excellent shooter cannot align iron sights precisely enough to CONSISTENTLY place rounds on target from field positions in adverse conditions with them.
>>
>>34724663
Both.

An inexperienced shooter can cock both of them up pretty easily (although far easier with irons).

Irons are slower, less precise, and less visible in poor light than optics. Literally their ONLY redeeming quality is they are fairly durable.

>>

>>34729193
>>
>>34729195
Compared to short sight radius yes.

Compared to a magnified optic no.

Compared to a non-magnified red dot/reflex/holographic optic, depends on the size of the aiming dot but still usually no.

Since in this case a "24 inch barreled .308" retains ballistic capability at ranges far exceeding most shooters' capabilities with iron sights BUT NOT with magnified optics, putting iron sights that are only good for humane kills to ~200 yards on a rifle capable of humane kills at 4-5x that distance is kinda dumb.

I don't need a rifle chambered in .45-70 to hunt deer, but that doesn't make it worse than a .223 rifle.

92% of the work is setting and zeroing the barreled action on the mill. 7% is the disassembly and reassembly of the rifle. Rest is the drilling and tapping.

I charge full 1 hour of work, 130€. It would not take so goddamn long if I could keep the jigs and shit ready setup in the mill but it is used for other work too so I can't.

So use a red dot of some form up on the receiver, should have no issues providing clear LOS over your can.

Alternatively make a ~1.25" OD can instead of the standard 1.5" OD and see about a taller front ramp to clear it.

Hell honestly with a tall enough front ramp you could even do a receiver-mounted peep sight.
