Armyfag here, APFT is 2 miles, Marine PT test is 3 miles. Their time standards are better, too (13 min 2mile to max as an 18 year old male in the Army, 18 min 3mile to max as an 18 year old male in the Marin Crops)

The oldskool SF were highly mobile & cunning men which operated behind enemy lines for extended periods of time with little to no support, often accomplishing tasks without ever being seen. Extraction was never a given and might be rescheduled hours if not days later than initially expected. Hit hard & fast if needed and then make yourself scarce.

Now SF tend to be monster men which hump a fuckton of gear and ammo, to put down insane amounts of fire in a short amount of time and are supported by air assets and support troops (Rangers, Marines, Army, ANA, ANP,...). They are dropped off close to their targets by helicopter or truck. Theoretically also HAHO or HALO drops, but that rarely ever happens anymore.
It's no secret half the SF are on steroids and sometimes even meth-like substances.

I made it about halfway through DELTA BUDs until I fractured my ACL during a failed HALO jump because some POG FUBARd my altimeter before the jump so when I pulled my chute I was only about 100 feet above the ground instead of 800. Since the op training was solo and had radio condition = BO (blackout) I had to crawl using nothing but my hands over 20 clicks to the extraction point.

As a medic I worked for a PA who was former ranger, this dude deployed like 6 or 7 times and killed people, and yet was a 40 year old slightly balding soldier.
I knew a former SF medic who also became a PA and he was was just a regular looking dude, you'd have no idea he was SF for 18 or so years before that.

Most people think the best soldiers is one who's trained his body to the limit. The reality is an ideal soldier is smart. Tactics are just as important as fitness,if not far more important. A group of intelligent guys (with knowledge of warfare) could slaughter a group of roid monkeys in a modern combat scenario easily.

I would presume the testing to get into elite units is just as much mental as physical, perhaps some scenario based questions designed to gauge the inductee's quick thinking abilities.
