I dunno man, 22s are just nice little guns. They're great for the first time on the range especially for antigunners or converts because they can learn that guns don't hurt and aren't scary.
I enjoy shooting my grandfather's 10/22jjust like any of my other guns, but its small and nice. And yeah shooting a ton of ammo for cheap is appealing too.

I don't think people actually recommend .22lr as a starter's round on here. Full-sized rounds tend to get people hooked on guns a lot faster and only someone that's too stupid to shoot a gun can't learn on rounds like 9mm, .223, or even 7.62x39mm.

I use my 597 with a fancy pellet rifle scope for when I feel like doing some long-range target practice in the desert without much of the long range. The CCI ammo is consistent enough that it lobs pretty predictably. Makes for less walking to and from the targets.

.22 has 2 roles for new shooters. First is starting them off gently rather than handing them a .308 that'll hurt if they don't shoulder it properly and turn them off shooting, Of course once they have the basics you can let them try bigger guns right then, you don't need them to make them wait or something.

Second is teaching marksmanship where you can focus on the technical side without developing bad habits and without spending much money.

OP, I own guns ranging across most of the common calibers, and of all my scoped hunting rifles, the one that has the most bodies is the 10/22. That thing has killed more snakes and squirrels than I could count, and all for cheap. Quiet too. Quit bitching about the .22
