I'm the same way. Get 9mm Glocks as a good, pragmatic foundation then expand into the revolver, 1911 or HK world. You'll never be satiated by one type of handgun, believe me anon

>>
>>34717405
Okay so you should be fine with anything in 9, 40 or 45 as long as you don't get any over-pressured rounds
I personally recommend 9mm because it's cheap, common and gets the job done just fine, ignore the memes on this site
Now, since carry isn't an issue, go for a full size
What is your budget?
>>

>>34717477
That's when you get into the nitty gritty. Honestly, I don't think Glocks are all that great as is, but the aftermarket for them is miles ahead or any other gun. And if you decide you don't like it, you will most likely be able to sell or trade a 9mm glock within a week. My go to recommendation is:

>If you only want or plan to buy 1 gun and don't absolutely need a mounted light (or a ton of options of WML at least), get a G26. You can always put g19/17/18 mags in it, but if you decide to carry, it's super easy to. You only lose out on sight radius and a little velocity.

>If you plan to buy more guns in the future and this is going to mostly be a HD and range gun, go with the 17, throw a light on that fucker, switch out the sights for something worth a damn. The 19 is fine too, but kinda useless if you have a 17 and a 26.
>>
>>34717264

Regardless of how much you buy into the caliber wars, you'll be able to buy and shoot 3 boxes of 9mm before you can buy two boxes of 45.

Yes I'm in the 9mm fan club but if you want to shoot often and get good it's 9mm or 22

If you're not going to carry it get a fucking target model not a midsize, glock 34 or glock 41, they're the size of a 1911 yet still manage to have a greater barrel length. If you don't want striker fired, it's not as hard as the retards on here claim to learn da/sa and it's more fun imo.

Really, there's a lot of great brands, pick one but get a full size or target model, the sight radius is extremely helpful

Ironically, I was dead set on a glock 19 until I tried it at the range and decided I didn't like the ergos and I went with the p320 instead.

The concept is there is nothing wrong with modern wonder 9s so ergonomics are the most important feature. Therefore only by handling them will you figure out "the best" one.

Take a list like >>34717810 and whichever one feels the best is what you should buy.

There's not much of an appreciable difference between modern 9mm full size hand guns

Find a way to shoot one or more pistols of each.
I was actually very surprised when doing this to help decide on my first handgun; the difference of recoil between cartridges didn't seem to be nearly as huge as I was led to believe by all the debates on the internet, and as such I decided on a .45 which I still enjoy to shoot regularly.
Believe me, the trigger pull and grip are WAY more important, and there's no way to get an idea of what you like online.
>>
>>34717972
Mine had that terrible gritty and spongy trigger they came with, so I put an apex in it. It was still shooting all over the place, so I had other people who were trainers try it, and they were getting the same thing. I looked it up, and the M&P's had barrel accuracy issues that they've supposedly fixed now. I wasn't about to buy a new bbl for it, so I traded it for a p226.

>>
>>34718106
Just get any standard 147 gr and it's even more quiet.
>>
>>34718484
Off the shelf 147gr is hit or miss depending on brand and bbl. So in order to ensure it's subsonic, most manufacturers load them lighter so they are in the neighborhood of 850-950 ft/s, which is muzzle energy around .380. Yes, due to physics and all 9mm will be quieter if you can get everything perfect, but it takes work to get the loading right. Off the shelf stuff, 9mm loses to much power.

>>
>>34717264
I'm in the same boat, OP. The truth of the matter is that there is no perfect handgun. It doesn't exist. However, here are some general principles that should guide your decision:

1. It has to be reliable. Fortunately, most handguns on the market are.

2. It has to be accurate. Again, not a problem for most guns.

3. It has to be good out of the box, but a few accessories are not bad. Getting a new grip can be a big improvement. Just don't overdo it with the customization.

4. I has to be big enough to use. People get tiny little handguns to carry, but those are the hardest to shoot.

5. The cartridge has to be strong enough to penetrate flesh and bone. Stay away from little 25 ACPs and 32 pimp guns.

6. It has to have enough capacity. Criminals don't act alone. You may have to kill 3 or more of them. One shot kills are a myth. They don't exist. You have to keep shooting until you hit a major blood vessel, no matter how powerful your cartridge is. Figure on having at least 8 shots. 15 is better.

7. Steel frames are heavier than plastic, but plastic can melt if you push it too far. Aluminum and Scandium frames can be a good compromise. Just beware that lighter guns have more felt recoil. So do guns with a high bore axis.

8. It NEEDS to have a good trigger. A good trigger should have no apparent movement after resistance is met. This movement is called creep. It should be kept to an absolute minimum. I can't stress this enough. Double action guns are very difficult to shoot accurately.

9. Keep the design simple. Avoid superfluous bells and whistles.

All that being considered, a 1911, Browning Hi Power, or Sig 226 would be my first choice.

If you want a 45 get an hk.

While I am a die hard fan of condition 1 to stay the Beretta sucks because it can't be carried that way is pure subjective bullshit.
Now if you said it sucks because you can inadvertently turn on the slide mounted safety during a malfunction clearance, then yes that is legitimate.
>inb4 slide mounted fags

>>34718129
Honestly this. With the rebate its a real no-brainer I think. Just get the normal basic bitch PPQ M2, with the American-style button mag release.

>unbeatable ergos

>dat trigger unf
>9mm, can't complain

DO IT OP
>>
>>34719811
So how the hell are you supposed to carry it? Condition 2? Why ruin the trigger pull for your first shot?

Also the Beretta has a nasty habit of accidentally ejecting the magazine. They should have done the mag release a little different.

>>34717264
I forgot to tell you you need to avoid guns with large or overly textured controls. The controls on a pistol should be hard to accidentally activate, and the texturing should be fine enough that it gives you a good grip without being painful when squeezed.
>>
>>34718046
Hi-Points look like 3-D printed prototypes.
>>
>>34719846
The "proper" way to carry a beretta 92 with slide mounted safety decocker (there are limited production frame safety sao models, good luck finding one) is to load the magazine, chamber a round d decock the hammer and leave the safety off.

The purpose is to not have to manipulate a safety when you draw the gun but the trigger being longer and heavier because, lol double action, gives more margin for safety.
>>
>>34717264
G21, pussboi
>>
>>34719891
Yes, I'm aware of what they were thinking when they designed it, but it's a stupid philosophy. Guns are NOT supposed to be safe. If you can't keep your finger off the trigger, you shouldn't carry a handgun at all. This obsession with safety is making our guns less useful tools.
>>
>>34719915
Well, in some ways I agree, you won't find a da/sa in my collection that can't be carried condition 1, but I came from 1911s and I'm stubborn as fuck.

There's plenty of damn good guns out there that allow you to carry how you want, but if you are so sure of your ability to safely operate a firearm nobody is stopping you from leaving your Beretta cocked while you carry it, you would have to leave the safety off though because it decocks automatically.
Not my suggestion, at all, but you do you man, you are the one living with the consequences of an ND.

>>34719964
>I came from 1911s
I like 1911s too. The only thing against them is their lack of capacity. I used to think, "One shot's all you need with 45." Then I realized that even 45 often needs multiple shots to get the job done. A spare magazine is your friend.

All else being equal, that's true. A 9mm in the aorta will bleed faster than a 45 in the lung. With a 9mm, the idea is to shoot more so you're more likely to hit those big blood vessels. I don't know if I agree with that or not, but that's the theory.
