A 12 ga slug ways about 24.8g according to wikipedia. It flies at 1800 fps. If you got stuck by a 12ga slug it would inflict 13606 newtons on you.
according to this article it takes 2,300 newtons to crush a human skull. If any of the shit I fumbled together is true it would probably just bruise you.

Listen hear OP, back when I was a grunt we wore these ceramic plates, light as fuck but they are only good as a one time use. To make a long story short, I was hit with a 7.62 on the the top right corner of my plate, about 3 inches inside the plate. Imagine getting punched buy a guy with the power of a freight train all in about a 125gr object. Needless to say it knocked me on my ass. Once we get back I had a couple broken/bruised ribs, bruised lung, dislocated shoulder, and a bruise that covered most of my chest.
I guess it's better than the alternative but I wouldn't want want to go through that again

A Federal (2 3/4"?) slug put huge dent in it, but it ultimately stopped it.

OG pointed out that while it did stop the slug, it would most likely have broken your back if you got hit by it.

I don't think a 12 gauge 2 3/4", 1oz slug would be consistently lethal if a vest stopped it. However, it seems like it would definitely cause enough trauma to take the recipient out of a fight.
