Mid size/caliber rifles SKS, AR15, AK, for a bit more a VZ2008.
Full size rifle you might want to bump your price up, FAL, C308, Vepr or a AR10.

AK, or build the cheapest passable AR you can.
Any other gun will leave you wishing you'd bought something else

Then I'd say stick with AR or AK. Ammo prices are roughly the same, and with that budget you can have either. Idk if there's a sticky for /arg/ but there is for /akg/ so go read it.
