Recent Acquisitions thread

There isn't one in the catalog. I just picked this Croatian PHP MV up, was $247 after bids, shipping, and transfer fee making it the cheapest pistol I own. It's a double stack 9mm P38/Beretta 92 hybrid from the Yugoslav civil war.

I haven't got a chance to shoot it yet, but the controls are wonky. The safety is pushed up to disengage which is inconvenient and awkward. It only blocks the hammer from striking the firing pin, so the trigger can still be pulled when it's on.

If you do this, the trigger doesn't return to the double action position until the safety is disengaged. While on safe with the trigger in the single action position, the slide can be racked. If you disengage the safety (allowing the trigger to return to the double action position) and re-engage it, the slide can no longer be racked. I don't know if this was an intentional design decision or not but it is strange.

The hammer cannot be cocked when the safety is on and the trigger is in the double action position. It can if the trigger is in the single action position. The gun cannot safely be carried with the safety down and hammer off because (I think) the firing pin block is only the safety.

Basically the safety is one of the only modifications from the other designs and they fucked it up.

Interesting.
I've seen these tons of times and never seen an actual review of one.

Is it closer to the Beretta or the Walther?
Would you buy it again?
What mags does it use?
On a scale of one to ten, how is
>the trigger
>the sights
>the ease of assembly/disassembly
>general fit and finish

I got mine for about $450 with two aluminum follower magazines. It predates accurate serial records and US importation, the closest I can date it is 1952-1953.

I'll answer too.
Walther.
Yes, if cheap enough. Grips are brittle and most don't come with grips, caveat emptor.
The magazines do not directly interchange with anything, however they are near as makes no difference the same external dimensions Beretta magazines with plastic baseplates such as those for the Cougar, which could be cut with an additional mag catch cutout to lock in the MV. Regular 92 magazines with thin metal baseplates are too long and would have no overinsertion stop other than the ejector.
Trigger: 6, Not awful but far from good.
Sights: 6, Serviceable fixed.
Ease of disassembly: 4, Getting the barrel out takes some contortion and patience.
Fit and finish: 3, Laughably shit. I squint when I shoot it. I wouldn't put 1 or 2 because this wasn't made in Khyber Pass.

But I like it for it's quirkiness and it's descendency from Walther.

Savage 720, $360 from Cabela's. Has an immaculate bore and had a badly set recoil spring but a perfectly fine action spring which leads me to believe it's spent most of it's days since it was made in 1936 in a safe.

I think it uses it's own proprietary magazines that are incompatible with Beretta 92 magazines. The guy I bought it from threw in an extra one because the kitchen table FFL took a week to send their FFL to the other dealer. They're 15 round, double stack.

The layout of the gun seems closer to a P38 than an M9. The slide release is in a position like on the P38, but the disassembly lever is closer to the 92. It has an spring under the barrel like a 92 but the overall layout of the slide is more P38.

The ergonomics are generally poor. The front of the grip is completely flat and the gun feels boxy and awkward in the hand. The slide release and magazine release are convenient and acceptable but the safety has the issues I described earlier. It's quite accessible to the thumb but goes the wrong way. The sights are big enough but have no dots or anything for contrast and also aren't serrated. 4/10, at least theyre made out of metal.

Overall build quality and machining seem to be alright, with flat surfaces smooth and even. Some machine marks are present on the frame which I believe is alloy. It may be steel, but feels very thin and light compared to the slide. The grips are surely cheap, fragile, and prone to cracking, I had to pay a premium and buy off GunBroker to get one with intact grips, most have broken or missing grips. I'd rate overall build quality 7/10. The internals seem more precisely machined than my CZ75.

Cont.
Disassembly is awkward are more difficult than it should be. Once the slide is forward, the spring must be pulled through a gap between the slide and frame before the slide can be removed. Some finageling is required to get the barrel out of the slide because it must be rotated 180 degrees to remove it and the locking block holder thing gets in the way. Most of the problems come from the design modifications the croats made. I haven't disassembled it further but the internals seem quite simple. Probably 3/10. Only gun I have that is worse to assemble and disassemble is my Ruger MKIII. Even my C96 is easier, but you don't need tools for the PHP.

The double action trigger is quite heavy and long, while the single action trigger has some slight slack and then a clean break with no stacking. Double action is smooth with no grit. I'd rate the double action trigger a 4/10 and single action a 6/10. Double action is smooth than my CZ even after hundreds of dollars of trigger parts and lots of polishing, but that's more a testament to how bad the double action on a CZ is than to the quality of this gun.

Overall, it's a curiosity more so than a practical firearm. The XDs the croats mae to replace it seem superior in every way. I bought it because it was a strange looking and strange functioning gun with an interesting history. For those purposes I'm satisfied. For any practical use, I'd recommend against it. It's better than a hi point and has a decent magazine capacity in 9mm, so I would buy it again, if only because I like having it in my collection. Plus, it has a cool Croatian crest on it.

The .32 versions are fun to shoot. The .380's are less enjoyable. They were also made postwar and imported by Interarms (the upper pistol in this photo). $300 would be too much for a worn postwar but might be fair for a worn Waffenamt'd example. Wartime commercials still seem to fetch in the $500-900 range but government acceptance stamps add a few hundred to that.

I tried three sets of those Grips4u and they were all poorly made in one way or another.

They once blamed a manufacturing defect on me "destructively installing" grips that wouldn't physically fit on my P88. The grips were returned undamaged because they obviously would not fit (pic related) so I didn't force them, but they charged me a 30% return fee.

The last set I bought were for a Beretta 21A and the contour of the grip didn't match the contour of the frame. I don't trust the company anymore.

Which is a shame, I wish they made them as nice as their cherrypicked, hand finished product photos, those look GREAT.
