Yes. The ugly sheen doesn't rust as easy as a polished one; that's what the vinegar is for. Sand it off if you don't like it; it's thin.

>>34677587
This
>>
>>34677560

the vinegar is for removing the rust.
that "ugly sheen" is there from rust and regular wear from using the knife.

carbon steel does not stay pretty forever. sharpen it, put a light coat of oil on it to reduce future rust then continue to use your knife as intended.
>>
It's a French peasant knife, it's supposed to look rustic
>>
>>34677560
It will eventually look like that in a couple years anyway. Same with any high carbon steel blade, unless you autistically polish it like some wanna-be samurai.

it's based on the chance and average cost of acquiring the gear in-game. Some gear is more rare, requiring more keys, requiring more dollaridoos. I don't play CS but it's the same deal with Hat Simulator 2.
>>
>>34677973
You can still get them for like 4 dollars apiece from time to time. I buy five or so when the price is right. Like most french weapons, it's great for bringing to a picnic.

Here is a man who knows nothing about what he's talking about. An Opinel is the best $15 dollars you can spend. It does what a knife should. Cut thing. It does 't do much else, and if, IF, it breaks, you already got way more than $15 worth of use out of it. But of course, you're just talking shit to justify your Microtech or Benchmade that you bever use or some shit. Spend the big bucks on guns. Knives ought to be cheap. It's a fucking piece of metal stuck to a chunk of wood.

I love Opinels, I sharpen mine on a stone with mineral oil. When you're done leave a light coat of oil to prevent rust, it makes the wood look nice too but don't get too much or the wood will swell a bit making it hard to open. If you fuck it up buy another, they're cheap but work great. Just keep it sharp, it's a general purpose knife meant to be used not some show piece.

>>
>>34679256
Why the mess? Carbon steel blades can be kept perfectly sharp if you use the rough underside of a coffe mug to sharpen them. I've been doing this for years. Just pull every side of the blade a couple of times over the rough part and she's good again.

>>34682210
>and the best 15usd knife to buy are morakniv

This, except I bought carbon steel Moras at Bauhaus for like $4.
They're laughably easy to get shaving sharp and beyond, all you need to do is smear some oil on them after you're done using them.
>>
>>34682367
>>34682210
I completely agree that Moras are the best cheap knives you can buy. They are very sharp when you get them and hold that edge very well.
I'm currently in the process of making a straight shaving razor out of a No.1 carbon blade.
>>
>>34682210
I've got a stray Morakniv that got left over by a relative. For $15 on Amazon it's a surprisingly good tool. Wouldn't really stab people with it but it's the perfect balance of cheap enough to use as a tool and not worry about beating it up but also durable enough to actually work.
>>
>>34677560

If you want to remove rust, use molasses.

Carbon isn't a problem though as long as you wipe it dry as soon as you get any water on it, and also wipe of finger prints as that can cause some minor rust if you've got high acidic sweat.

Or, just buy the stainless Opinel and forget about it.

Carbon is only really of more worth for larger knives and axes.

Even assuming your right about the other anon's motives your literally doing the same thing, being obnoxious with your opinion to defend your purchase, just at the opposite end of the spectrum...

Opinel are fine knives for what they are but even an Ontario Rat is going to be a lot more convenient and handy just due to being modern and it's only like $10 more.

Not wanting to spend money on high end knives is fine but they cost that much for a reason whether or not you see value in it.

The blade is just Birchwood Casey Perma-Blue.

Thanks!

>Vinegar is a dilute acid
>Acid reacts with steel
>Surprised to find reaction products on the steel exposed to vinegar.

This is why you need to pay attention in chemistry class, otherwise you look like a moron. You didn't "clean" your knife with vinegar, you caused it to oxidize.

Now there are many reasons to oxidize a steel object, much like blueing on a gun it creates a more stable and tough outer layer of controlled and understood oxidation rather than the highly damaging "scale" rust that jst letting it sit in water and air will provide. That oxidation of the outside will provide a level of protection for your knife and will make it harder for the very ugly and structurally damaging rust to form on the blade.

Of you don't like it it is literally a couple molecules thick on the blade, sand it off and polish the steel back to a shine.

Or stop being retarded and following and retard thing you see on the internet before you understand WHAT it is you are doing. Or go ahead and delete System32 to increase your computer speed 300 percent. You just saw it on the internet, must be true and will give great results!
>>
>>34677560
of cleaning was the point, i'm sorry but you just etched your blade. only its with vinegar. on a random (yet decent french coutellerie) blade.

with ferric chloride on a parrtern wealded blade it looks better. here it just leave shitty stains of corrosion everywhere.
>>
Best way to patina a carbon steel blade is to stab it into a citrus fruit and leave it overnight. Leaves a neato design.
>>
>>34682590

>my $7 Opinel can be made sharper than my $100 Bitchmade
>>
How does 3 in 1 oil work for sharpening stones?
>>
>>34677560
It's called Patina. Your knife would eventually look like that after a couple years of use you're just short cutting it. Patina actually helps to protect the blade from more damaging corrosion. Blueing is a form of controlled rusting.
>>
>>34690309
Yes thats what I regularly use, but I have used vegetable oil, motor oil and even CLP in the field.
Do not use WD40 its worse than using no oil at all.
>>
>Waaaah! My knife isn't as shiny as I wanted it to be!

Toss it, it's disposable.

This is a weapons board. Opineal knives are for cutting cheese at picnics.
>>
>>34677560
>Well /k/? Did I ruin a perfectly good knife or is this ugly sheen part of the experience?
Hi frog here, other anons answered perfectly, however if you want a shiny shiny blade, you can still sharpen the edge of the blade with a soft sharpening wheel stone on which you applied wax and then polish the whole blade, including the edge, using a felt wheel.

You will get a shiny katana-looking carbon steel blade and an excellent tool for shaving or to commit sudoku. My dad uses this kind of method with smaller opinel knives to use as cheap, simple, yet effective tools for decorative wood carving.
