Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, or Modified Choke
Can someone explain these barrels clearly to a shotgun noob and tell me which is better for self defense shotgun? Thanks.

Because it seems like all the Remington police models are Improves Cylinder. Why is that?

The choke type contolls patterning at range. Tighter patterns mean longer range. For self defense it doesn't really matter because the ranges will be so close. This is more for shooting birds on the wing.

In terms of "tightness" of the shotguns cone of spread it goes full>modified>improved cylinder>cylinder. At most home defense/ self defense distances however there really isn't enough distance to see much of a difference so most home defense shotguns default to the cheaper improved or cylinder choked barrels. Full and modified are mostly used for hunting guns.

Any restrictions on the type of load you can shoot with an improved cylinder choke? Rifled slugs? All buckshot and birdshot?

On the cyl end u can shoot everything. Full and modified is where u need to watch it.
