Why the fuck was the distance between the trigger and magazine so fucking huge on so many WW2-era SMGs?
Why the fuck didn't they just do this? You'd think having a much shorter gun would be a good thing.
I first thought it must be for simplicity's sake, but when I took a look at the MP40's internals, it turns out there's a fuckhuge transfer bar, so some retard WANTED the trigger all the way back there. They easily could've used a different trigger mechanism.
LOOK AT THAT FUCKING TRANSFER BAR JESUS CHRIST
>>34672333
Pistol grip near the end provides leverage for recoil control in full auto if firing without using the stock.
Pistol grip in the middle is a fulcrum that allows the muzzle to pivot and rise up.
>>34672333
where the fuck do i grip it the magazine?
>>34672349
2 hands (and a stock) give you all the leverage you need.
Just noticed that the charging handle would knock the shooter in the face, although that could easily be fixed.
>>34672333
have you ever held a firearm in your hands?
>>34672355
the magwell, silly
>>34672368
do you have baby hands?
>>34672370
Does hickok45 have baby hands?
>>34672382
no but the pistol grip is not right behind the magwell
>>34672333
The charging handle would knock you in the face if you'd put it like that.
>b-b-b-but my non-reciprocating charging handle
In an open-bolt straight blowback SMG with stamped receiver(or pipe-style receiver)? It's not impossible but they were made like that because it allowed them to be simpler and cheaper, and you're adding elements on top of it because ???
Also MP38/40 are the main offenders of this "problem" so you're really cherry picking.
>>34672403
The simplest fix would be to just put the charging handle on the right. It would be a serviceable location considering it would place it in a very easily reachable location for the right hand, kinda like on a bolt-action.
and fuck lefties
And as for the trigger mechanism, you can see here
>>34672337
there's a transfer bar between the trigger and sear, I doubt that moving the trigger forward would require a more complex mechanism
no
>>34672333
bc it's basically a straight blowback gun without a real locking system and with those, a sturdy spring and a long deceleration space for the bolt are really needed unless you want the gun to beat itself (and the shooter) to death within a few hundred rounds.
>>34672455
>Namefag being stupid as hell
What a surprise!
>>34672438
Only real reason I can think of is that it was designed with old-school wood stocks in mind and the design stuck.
"Old SMG had handle way back here, therefore new SMG will have handle back here too. Oh scheisse! Now it needs a long transfer bar, too late to change it now!"
The Thompson obviously didn't have this problem and looks similar to your shopped MP40.
OP, you're trying to solve a problem that isn't there. Stop it.

The magwell is not unacceptable grip.

Open bolt
>>34672862
it's literally the grip on the MP40
>>34672403
The ppsh had this issue, same with the sten
Even the fucking grease gun had this issue (but not the Thompson for some reason)
>>34672333
>>34672337
For having a transfer bar the length of a railroad tie, the trigger pull actually isn't bad.

OP is a faggot, also best version.
The PPSh-2 did this but it was never adopted. And the Thompson SMG of course.

>1. scale of the war
irrelevant. OP's design would be simpler and cheaper to make.
>2. quality of materials
irrelevant. There's nothing more demanding about eliminating the transfer bar to move the trigger closer to the front
>3. demand of materials in multiple sectors
again
4. in-experience with new light weight automatic/simi-automatic designs
It's probably this, t b h
Here you go, OP.
>>34672333
I like the way that looks but with an open bolt it would be terrible. Maybe if it had the charging handle on the top like the early Thompsons.
>>34672487
>The Thompson obviously didn't have this problem and looks similar to your shopped MP40.
Bullshit
>looks a Thompson
>ok never mind
>>34672487
That's what I'm thinking too. Have you seen early semi auto rifles? Super long receiver to fit the long bolt, magazine alllll the way up front, and then a 20+ inch barrel. Just sharpen the end and use it as a pike, it's fucking long enough
>>34672333
OP, make two fists of your hands and hold them up about 12 inches in front of your face. Now push them together until they touch. Now pull them apart until they are 15-20 inches apart. See?
superior mp40 variant coming through
>>34672333
The mp40 fires from the open bolt and the trigger and sear is where it is to strip a cartridge off the mag, fire, and cycle rearward
Tl;Dr open bolt
>>34672333
Because the fucking bolt is huge.

Can someone explain this to me? Why couldn't the bolt/recoil spring assembly just be shifted back into the space the stock occupies, while the stock itself is made shorter to compensate?
One of you mentioned the sear being at the back, but the image here >>34672337 makes it look like its about where OP wants to put his grip.

>it's a nice smg but it does have its flaws
>first off, they put the trigger on the top of the gun for whatever reason, makes it really hard to shoot but you can manage
>Then there is the complete lack of sights on the top of the gun, save for a tiny lump on the end of the barrel that doesn't correlate to the poi very well, but this can be rectified using an aftermarket sight.
>the gun also lacks any ad sling points, except for one really poorly placed one on the underside of thee muzzle, which may work with single point slings but I digress.
> the absolute worst part however is that it's very difficult to fire whilst prone with this gun, since the mag sticks so far down.
