I can't think of a situation where it would be preferable to send an actual guy to defuse a bomb by hand rather than poke it full of holes with a Barrett from far away. Can someone enlighten me? How could it possibly be worth the risk?

Also, to state the obvious there isn't any fucking way a bomb suit would save your life for anything bigger than a hand grenade.

Collateral damage. That said there's a neato thing that I've forgotten the name of that's pretty much an exploding water cannon. It's designed to just blast the explosive in half (usually the power supply) without either setting the explosive off or requiring human interaction.

I wonder if that suit construction is even on par with the US ones (presuming it's different; it does look different). If you go frame by frame, you can see the suit stripped off of him (on the arms; his arms spread out 2 frames later but seem attached?).

Still doubt he survived and I doubt any suit construction would save that guy.

uh yes, instead of suiciding the bomb disposal guy like third world retards. If they can't blow it up in-place then they can move it, and if it blows up mid travel then tough shit, it wouldn't kill anyone.
>>
>>34670801
yeah honestly just shoot it or something and if it's too close to something just drag it away, no point in risking life like this.
>>
>>34673560
>If they can't blow it up in-place then they can move it
And if it has a tamper switch?
>if it blows up mid travel then tough shit, it wouldn't kill anyone.
You literally cannot make such a judgement without knowing its composition. The shrapnel from a package that size is more than sufficient to kill even hundreds of feet away, without even taking into account the use of unusual explosives or circumstantial issues (like the proximity to a fuel station scenario that the other guy mentioned) that could exacerbate the situation. Looks like its potentially large enough to hold a chain of 2-3 105mm projectiles, which would be enough to level buildings on either side of the road.

Ain't nothing on this great planet that's gonna save you from a bomb blowing up in your face except the lord above or 470mm of armor.

It'll keep your shit intact real nice if you're caught in the indirect blast radius. Anything greater than 5m from the blast you'll be doing a fuck of a lot better than if you didn't have the suit.

>>
>>34676124
To be fair it was 6:30 in the morning, found by a graveyard shift worker, didn't have any identifying marks, didn't have any openings, appeared under pretty sketchy circumstances, and he didn't get any notices about delivery of said object. I would be pretty fucking suspicious of it too
>>
>>34671348
Jesus. He got turned inside out.
>>
>>34676214
All im saying is that the chances of the bomb going off before anyone knew there was a bomb in the first place were pretty high.

You have to be lucky enough that the people that find it dont go "what does this switch do?" or "wtf is this doing here? move it to somewhere else!". My guess is that the nightshift worker was involved in the plan, otherwise the risk would have been to big.

I do love the ending though.

>> When asked why so few people these days seem to remember the events that unfolded in Lake Tahoe on 26-27 August 1980, Jonkey’s speculation is succinct: “Nobody died.”
>>
>>34670361
Depends on the size of the bomb. A couple of rigged grenades/mortar bombs/land mines, sure for a given value of save. You'll live but you won't be 100% factory new anymore.

Something like rigged artillery shells or large bombs no. It will mitigate a partial detonation but if the whole thing goes off you'll never know it.

It really depends on the bomb
If you're defusing a haji-rigged handgrenade or pipe bomb you're pretty much good except for your hands

If you're defusing a bunch of 155s or something you're fugged with or without

Sometimes you get rare cases where a tech gets launched by a car bomb and is unharmed

Most of what's already been said, plus if you want to try and ID the bombmaker, your job is going to be infinitely easier if you have an intact device from which you can identify technique, materials, trace, etc. It's still wholly feasible to get much of that kind of data from an activated device, but if it's a domestic bombing, clearer physical evidence will hold up better than a lot of dry expert testimony.

The dozer suits? Yes, obviously, they can tank entire LMG belts to the chest and head.
IRL? No. EOD suits are just kevlar for flexibility. You don't need hardplates unless yu're trying to defy dedicated armor-piercing ammo, and bomb shrapnel doesn't really qualify for that.

>>34670361
That is a Med Eng EOD 9 Bomb Suit. It weighs 95 lbs. It is rated to allow a bomb technician to survive 1 lbs pound of dynamite going off 4 feet away. It is partly designed to protect against blast pressure, fragmentation, and fire. Blast pressure is what is going to kill you...blast pressure waves move incredibly fast and water does not compress....

It is not a magic suit. If your are holding the explosive in your hands there is no bomb suit yet made that will keep you alive. The british, south american, and middle eastern bomb techs have been killed in bomb suits for many years now.....Israelis are a different breed...

Robots are nice to have but are prone to malfunction at the most in-opportune of times....
