I bought the 2014 blue version, its a great and fun gun and I taught a lot of my friends to shoot on it as ammo is cheap and its petty reliable, only downside is takedown is a bitch

Yes, it's a good choice for a first pistol. Ammo is cheap, and the firearm shoots like a fucking laser-pointer at the range. It's great for building up your fundamentals, and then you can trick it out and use it as a race-gun when you get-good.

I'd like to note that .22 isn't considered to be sufficent as a self-defense round, but it's still better than fucking nothing. A 9mm in standard or compact size could also be a good first pistol, but none of them are quite as fun as a Ruger 22/45.
