>>

I'll take the bait.
Because it would severely limit mobility, which is worse than not having 100% protection, plus adding bulk and weight to an already heavy kit is undesirable. I could ask the same question about any non covered body part and the answer would be the same.

Hard body armor is shit unless you are absolutely door kicking frontline military infantry. Civilians with plates Crack me the fuck up.

That being said you can take a gut shot, and provided you receive surgical medical care and emergency life saving techniques within a few hours, you will survive, probably have to wear a colostomy bag, but you will survive. Taking a rifle round high chest is pretty much a death sentence.

Hard armor is a hindrance in 99% of situations. Mobility is king.

Fucking this. Jesus Christ. I'm honestly not even that against body armor but I know that when you are considering/making those purchases, you are definitely approaching the the right side of the diminishing returns spectrum. SHTF, WROL situations dictate you should just fucking leave (for the country, to family's, to anything) and flee the jackboots, raging nogs, and radioactive spiders you are fleeing. What scenario are you envisioning you are in when you'll be using you're own body armor in the afterworld, that you wouldn't be drafted and supplied by a military or police presence.

I would like to see any of the people who advocate wearing body armor for their fantasies run 3 miles with it along with their rifles and see how they fare.

Body armor is fun and games until it's actually time to wear it, for a prolonged amount of time and fighting is a physically exerting thing. This is something most people here do not understand.

Having the right tactics, skills and mindset to avoid such situations will serve you better than walking around your flooded New Orleans type of shitstorm looking like a heavily armed cowboy that any armed thug will immediately register as an armed threat.

Why the fuck would anybody be running around in armor though?

Seriously, grab your family, grab your buddies, get out of dodge, or bug out and rely on safety in numbers.

Body armor doesn't even weigh that much, I'm 6'7 giant dad mode and for me my plates together are 20 pounds roughly. Throw on rifle, ammo, radio and med kit I'm at around 35ish.

And It'd sooner deal with the physical wear and uncomfort than take a bullet to the lung. Though its not like I plan on getting into a firefight in the first place because the people who make it are going to be the defensive types, the meek and the military and police established. Anybody going around thinking they can pop one or two into someone and be done with it are going to be put down like rats by the dude sitting in a water tower with his Savage Axis, or the national guard who will drop you on the spot to keep peace and order. At which point armor becomes an enhancing deterrent until society stabilizes. And even then, it's something I'm not even going to be wearing in the open, because even though its a deterrent, it also makes you a target.

it's "spalling", and I dare to claim that it's a tad exaggerated issue of sorts. No one wears naked metal plates on them anymore; the PCs themselves provide a quite sturdy layer of nylon on top.

Another thing that comes to mind is the LA riots. If you offered the rooftop Koreans sitting in one spot defending their store plate carriers and plates do you think they would have turned them down?
>>
>>34664708
both have limitations as well and the mitigation factors for steel leave it vulnerable to common hunting rounds that ceramics will stop. That said for having a static barrier steel does win out as thickness and weight are lesser factors to cost and durability. Steel can work for mobile personal protection but ceramics even at level 3 just beat them out overall

Out in the rural lands where distances are the divide - the ability to be prone out is a huge THING. You are using rogers rangers tactics, you are sticking to tree lines and avoid big fields.

If its you and a few buddies and you don't hold exactly what you would call numerical superiority, then mobility is fucking king.

Digging in and going prone for your ambush against whatever comes down this road is paramount.
Having a 20 lb plate carrier on with a mag or 2 on it
with an alice belt and pouches fill with ammo water and side arm what 15+ more lbs
that rifle 6-10 lbs
ruck sack with rations for 2-3 days, more water, spare ammo, medical kit

Its hot, you and 4 other guys are walking in the sun, trying to catch shade where you can. Can't use vehicle cause emp took care of everything.

Because contrary to memes, it does work. Also, ceramic does break fairly easily if you drop it. IRL, ceramic is definitely better than steel, but since this is /k/ and everyone is LARPing, steel is fine and work adequately for the few of us who actually train. Also, if SHTF, steel works.
>>
>>34665563

Thing is cracks don't make ceramic lose all protection. They reduce penetration velocity like by 10% against rated threat. As level IV rated against M2 AP it protection overmatches most ammo by huge margin so just cracks will do no difference.

Because plate carriers are designed to optimize both protection AND mobility. Focusing on one at great cost to the other leads to a sub-optimal level of vulnerability, given that both are necessary to avoid being killed in combat.

For much the same reason that all modern tanks draw their lineage from "medium" design principles (rather than heavy or light tanks), infantry are gravitating towards plate carriers because they are the best compromise between armor and speed. Especially with lighter ceramic plates, PCs allow a soldier near-complete range of motion while still protecting them from nearly all non-treatable torso injuries.

Consider also that the fighting load of American infantry (I can't speak for other Western armies) is constantly increasing to accommodate more technology-based solutions to IEDs and communications. You gotta cut weight somewhere.
>>
I'll tell you niggers why:

Because at the end of the day, mobility is gonna pay dividends more than gut protection.

I've seen someone take 7.62 to the stomach and proceed to immediately dump a mag into the shooter.

Gut shots aren't lethal, they just suck and can fuck you up.

Also a lot of ceramic plates now have a grid pattern cut into them, which helps them deal with multiple strikes better. Each little square is almost like a 'scale' and the damage is usually kept to that scale or the nearby ones, leaving the rest of the vest intact

Why does everyone assume that it has to be one entire steel plate? A separate plate can be stored in an abdominal pouch that's connected by a flap, similarly to the cod piece on heavier armor.

You can have separate lower lumbar, hip, and lower abdominal armor pouches connected by elastic so there's still a degree of freedom of movement. It wouldn't be that expensive because the materials are all nylon.

Better yet, make PICO-MV standard, use R&D to squeeze maneuverability out of modular armor systems.

Did not know that ....... here I was going through the expense of finding the Spitzer version or reloading. What distance and barrel length has worked with your hp version?
>>

I wasn't reffering to the whole mobility thing, I was talking about how retarded he sounded when he said he could tank shots to the chest
>>
>>34662142
You mostly want to protect your heart, lungs, and head since they are the 3 most important organs.
>>
>>34672881
Still, being able to take a couple of shots to the chest without bleeding seems like a good deal
>>
>>34672966
Agreed
>>
>>34672959
After the big three organs, you have the big three arteries. One is protected the same way you protect the heart, a gorget and plate skirt cover the other two. Just those two additions will make pistol bullets much less lethal.
>>
>Shit mobility

>>34667329
What's your argument? Newton's Third Law is exactly why you are wrong. You have to take into account the sectional density and plasticity/elasticity of the bodies in this system to truly understand how they will deform and displace the force of impact. That is what makes the difference between someone without armor getting slotted (even with the projectile retaining some kinetic energy as it exits) and someone with armor getting the wind knocked out of them with potentially bruised ribs and internal bleeding. That kinetic energy has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is the poor sap getting shot.

1/10, made me fucking reply.

on the off chance you're not a complete retard posting bait, i'll clue you in to some hydration facts.

most people in this thread are talking about SHTF kit, and might not be able to return to your cozy FOB every day.

male typical range for % water in their system is 50-65%. females are 45-60%. Max on both scales is the outlier, not the norm.

in-shape athletes lose 1.75-3.00 pounds of water weight per hour during exercise. Average of 2.4 lbs/hour on your 200 pound frame means you have about:

45 minutes of continuous activity before noticeable thirst

90 minutes before performance decreasing
(thinking, moving, calculating, vision etc.)

3 hours before 30% loss of performance

4 hours before headaches and loss of thermoregulation

6 hours before collapse

8-9 hours before coma and or death

taking a break extends the timeline, but not by much if you're not replacing salts and water.

this is always a shitty argument. The vast majority of /k/ will never fire any of their guns in anger but no one ever brings this up when talking about $2000+ guns. You can argue that its ok because the guns are cool/collectible but the same argument can be applied to armor.

Katrina was what happened when you take detroit and put it under 12 feet of water.

Looters did exist, but New Orleans is a shit fest ghetto. So you stay away from the cities and you're good.

For me I live in central Wisconsin, so at most I'd have to worry about is the nigger types spilling out of chicago and Milwaukee which is our own little Chicago, minus the serious crime.

Besides, if you stay away from the cities, in 90% of cases, if they're like Jew York, they'll run out of water and food within 3 days even if immediate, hard rationing is enacted.
