They can't just blatantly do that, the political pushback is too great, so they focus on features that are associated with military weapons and not with civilian weapons, such as pistol grips, on semi-autos and ban those thinking that they'll ban all weapons of the type, not knowing that a pistol grip can be modified or deleted entirely on most designs.

That's where you're wrong. EVERY firearm you can name has at some point been used as a weapon of war, some more recently than you might think. Therefore EVERY firearm is a military weapon.

Realistically speaking, do you think America will ever go as far as European/Australian level gun control? Most people I know own at least one firearm (We have two in our house, AK and a 10/22) so it seems like it would be a massive overhaul on the government's part to enforce that. Even if they decide to grandfather in everybody that already owns the restricted firearms, most people already own those firearms. They'd literally have to go door to door in every free state and search peoples' homes and take their guns, and there's no way they would do that (at least so suddenly) due to the enormous political backlash.

There's no logical reason to it. It's a combination of
a) ignorance
and
b) intentionally increasing gun controls by any amount to justify future additional gun control

When Diane Feinstein was doodling up her Assault Weapons Ban she found she had to define what makes an "Assault Weapon" and knowing nothing about how guns work she had her interns acquire a bunch of gun magazines, looked at the pictures in them to identify what features make an assault weapon assaulty, made up a bunch of BS about how those features make the gun more assaulty and pushed to ban them.

To acquire a hang gun "license" you have to be a active member of a shooting club for at least 6 months and after that you are only allowed to use it for range shooting. It has to be dismantled under transport and kept locked in a safe at all times. You are not even allowed to carry a small knife or any sharp device with out fair reason, which do not include self defense.

You'd be surprised. Militias in many countries use whatever the fuck they can get their hands on, including hunting rifles. Tikkas are sold around the world, so I'd bet somebody somewhere has used it as a weapon of war. To those uneducated about guns, it's a seemingly innocuous feature that can be easily characterized as 'dangerous' because it's reminiscent of military firearms. While many nogunz wouldn't support outright banning of a certain type of firearm, most are happy to ban one feature especially when you've got commie hoplophobes like Feinstein and the Brady Bunch screaming about 'baby killing pistol grips/muh assault 'weapons' " etc. Even fudds won't put up much of a fight to banning a pistol grip, because remington 700s and 870s with wood stocks don't have a grip anyways. Therefore, it's a sneaky way for the leftists to erode our constitutional rights in a way that isn't obvious to the majority of the population. They start down the slipper slope with pistol grips, with more undoubtedly to follow. Furthermore, they hope by banning so many AR15 features, like pistol grips, removable mags, etc that they can just render the platform entirely unusable. It's just like what we're doing to Obamacare, really - turning it into such trash that nobody really wants it. The difference is, while we're clawing our rights back, the dems are trying to destroy them in their ceaseless campaign to destroy America. Quite clever, actually, as conniving as it is.
