How difficult would it be to make a completely functioning goatsfoot crossbow? I only ask because nost if not all sites selling medeical crossbows say that their product is only for decoration, and lack the actual power of the weapons theyre modeled after.
>>
>>34655484
On a scale of 1-10 probably somewhere between 1 and 10.
10 Being most difficult and 1 being easiest obviously.
>>
I doubt it would be too difficult. There are several sites online for dedicated bow makers. I'm sure they'd have more insight than anyone on /k/

Making a crossbow is considerably harder than making a bow.
>>
>>34655738
no it isn't

O.K then
Show us pics when you're done.

I'd order a new one from New World Arbalest.
Guy hand makes them to order; I've been to his workshop and own a nice 15th century Danish reproduction.

He'll make them up to 1500lb draw if you want.

This statement proves that you are nowhere near prepared to make either one. Educate yourself before posting, please.
>>
Its not too hard but definitely takes some planning. Try starting with some cheap materials, PVC pipe maybe, get your trigger figured out, then move on to wood.

read this
https://www.amazon.com/Crossbow-Military-Sporting-History-Construction/dp/160239010X

I made one, I started with low power prods from pistol crossbows and worked my way up in confidence. the problem is the weird size wood you need, regular 2x4s and 1x3s ect are not going to work, they need to be really fat on the belly. I made a laminated one from 1x4s. It exploded and a shard of wood flew straight into my throat. I stopped playing with crossbows after that.

REALLY REALLY pay attention to wood grain, and get the lowest power prod you can get. I had a 60 lbs one and quite nice walnut.

can confirm, he makes quailty bows.

>>34655484
If fucking dumb poor surfs can make one I'm sure you can figure it out honey.

Start here and you should be able to understand how one works and it will allow you to move to more powerful designs.

>push peg trigger
yeah idk bout using such a strong prod with that kind of mechanism, but wheel nut is quite a bit harder to make for sure. Push peg puts all the pressure of the string on wood of the stock. with that little cut for the string, you can imagine how >>34656079 my attempt exploded, the pressure broke the wood. wheel nut is pretty cool, and I really want to try it, it seems alot safer.

Crossbows have to HOLD their energy until you pull the trigger, with bows the human holds it for a fraction of a second and merely lets go. that puts so much more stress on everything that unless you get things right the first time, things wont work well at all. a Self bow is so simple to make its not even funny, I made one in boyscouts when I was 12 with minimal adult supervision.

there is a big difference between getting something to technically shoot, and it really being a functional device. the super short draw of a crossbow vs the 28 inches of a bow means that the prod has to be so much stronger, and that means better construction to get a similar range and accuracy. Don't get me started on accuracy, the stock adds so much drag and the fact that you only have 2 veins on your arrow.

You're not wrong but something with as much tension and high chance of failure shouldn't be just jumped into.
>>
>>34656471
I think with maybe a 50-60 lb that it could be fun fun little larpy grade shoot your friends with tennis ball arrows thing, 100lbs is almost a real hunting bow kinda thing.
>>
>>34656537

Ive made that particular one and haven't had any issues

Popular Mechanics had instruction on how to make them a long time ago. Heres the first page. You can find the rest.
>>
>>34656537
I used to larp. 50-60 lbs was prohibited. Crossbows were restricted to 25lb draw weight. Regular bows were 40lb draw weight. And that's with foam tipped arrows. Needless to say, it made bows kinda suck, as you could only get an effective shot at melee ranges.

well, maybe SCA grade then, their archery stuff is still pretty crumby.
