The first Royal Navy Type 26 City-Class GCS Frigate has started construction in Govan, Scotland. Her hull has just started to be cut. Her namesake to be HMS Glasgow. 8 have been planned to be built, and are to replace the Royal Navy's ageing 13 Type 23 frigates, as an Anti-Submarine frigate. Each ship will house 118 souls, with a full capacity of 208.

BAE states it's plan is to create the worlds quietest ship, and is planned to escort the two QE Class carriers and the RN's submarine fleet. She has a displacement of 8,000 tonnes at her full load, 492ft length and her beam at 68ft. Powered by a Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine, accompanied with four MTU diesel generators and two electric motors. Her speed reaches an excess of 26 knots, and has the capability to travel 7000 nautical miles.

She will be equipped with 48 VLS silo's, and to use CAMM missiles. 24 silo strike-length Mk 41's will be fitted to use Tomahawk's, RUM-139's, and AGM-158C LRASM's.

Her secondary guns will be 1 5 inch Mk.45, 2 DS30M Mark 2's, 2 Phalanx CIWS, 2 M134's and 4 L7A2 GPMG's. Her defence will be IRVIN GQ DLF's.

She also has room to house two helicopters at any given time, be it a Wildcat armed with ASM or AST's, or a Merlin armed with 4 AST's.

Her eyes and ears will also be a Type 997 Artisan 3D radar, a Kelvin Hughes SharpEye navigational radar, with a towed sonar array, accompanied by a bow sonar and a SCOT-5 SATCOM.

She's a beauty, isn't she /k/?

Will be worse than the poorly designed type 45. Should of bought Chinese.
>>

This appears to have become the standard answer to anything naval here on /k/ recently. Some kid retarded enough to think it's hilarious, or have we somehow ended up on Beijing's propaganda list?
>>
>>34642933
Considering the vast amount of Chicom threads praising China, there's an actual possiblity that they're Chinese shills.

>have we somehow ended up on Beijing's propaganda list?
It's been that way for a while now, they get BTFO in every real discussion. It's gotten a lot worse since Trump got elected.

Honestly, while the rest is all nice to have, these ships need to be the best blue water ASW vessels in the world to justify their price tag. Yes they are sold as being "general purpose", but doing odd jobs is what those Type 31s are supposed to be for, the Type 26s are what the planned carrier groups are going to depend on against the biggest threat to warships.

Its a beauty

I have faith. Both the BAE and RN have taken a good, hard long look at the colossus fuckup which is the Zumwalt-class ship. I have faith that they know what they're doing.

Should the bongs play their cards right, the RN will field the best ASW ships the world has seen.

Its all northrop grunmans fault they underspecc'd on the intercooler, so got fucked over.

I recently read a report by FAS on Chink naval procurement, and one of their sources was a Chink navy messageboard, not unlike /k/

I don't know if we should be alarmed that a Botswanan herbal medicine imageboard should be given any credence, but its happening.

It's like the Russins taking coordinates from a Malaysian cartoon forum and bombing Isis with it. Or Janes taking information out of their ass and burgers take them as facts and doesn't question it.

In theory all the major components are safe. The sonars & radar have been proven on the Type 23, the Merlin and Wildcat have been doing a decent job at sea (thank fuck the MoD stayed away from the NH-90, I wouldn't touch it with a stolen refuelling probe), and the MT-30 turbines on the QE carriers look sound. My only fear is that there is a cock up in the construction and the hulls end up an order of magnitude less quiet than they are supposed to be when patrolling.

Admittedly it was quality information that was afterwards reconned by drone.

Thankfully, the RN and Westminister have planned ahead for this. The first several ships are contracted to BAE, and if they do a poor job, the contract will be given to another firm.

This is good, imo. Puts pressure on BAE, since there's competition now. If BAE manages to fuck up the construction, Westminister will have their heads.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that this frigate is more heavily armed than the type 45 destroyer. Why do the bongs do this?

Hopefully /diy/ gets the Felony Falcon off the ground and then /sg/ will be able to get their own drone footage.

There are two issues. Firstly, the Type 45 is heavily afflicted by the "fitted for but not with" phenomenon (FFBNW) afflicting many Western navys, it has room for extra VLS and future upgrades, but the money has not been made available to fit it. Secondly, once you actually strip away the extraneous information, the key difference in combat hardware between the two vessels is the monster SAMPSON radar on the Type 45, and the vast amounts of extra available electrical power due to possessing two gas turbines in an IEP configuration.

Type 23 is already the best ASW frigate in the world, Type 26 should have no difficulty setting the bar higher.

People forget that amongst all the glamour of naval aviation, ASW is the crown of the RN. And while the USN is undoubtedly better equipped, the RN is better trained, or at least more orientated towards.

RN frigates are general purpose ships with some versions/flights/blocks specialising in ASW. The rest carry the fleets ASM's.

Destroyers are area defence ships with command and control features, they are equipped with the best radars and AAW missiles in the fleet.

T45 will follow close to the carriers or other valuable targets and provide area defence.

ASW spec T23 and T26 will be on the fleet permitter looking for submarines and able to launch ASM's/SSM's as they will be the closest targets to the enemy.

Non ASW spec T23 and the coming T31 Corvette are for picket duties, naval gunfire support and humanitarian operations.

The RN does not follow the US policy of every ship needing to be a jack of all trades.

>Current fleet is going through a major refit on their primary ship class

The fuck do you think is going to happen? They're maintaining a 1/3 operational rate which is pretty standard, while also accounting for upgrading every one of their entire frigate class.

It's like retards who go HURR HURR NIMITZ NOT AT SEA. This is what ships do.
