I used to run in these bc I got shin splints bad with regular running shoes. Honestly they helped me relearn how to run without striking my heel, and I could give negative shits about what people thought of my footwear if I'm not in pain.
Tbf though, trail running is tough with them bc pebbles, sticks sometimes poke/get stuck between your toes; there's no way a military would adopt them.
I wore holes in the bottom of mine running so much. I kept a pair that I now use as river shoes when kayaking.

Honestly having individual toes is just useless, having thin soles tho is pretty good for all around use, not for military use tho.

I was in the Army before and when these got popular. No one cared when it was just a few officers, warrants, and SNCOs wearing them and doing PT on their own. The minute enlisted and NCOs started wearing them to PT formations. The old farts got fanny flustered because they were slightly different but with in the rules. So the army banned them.

Which is a shame, because they really did help me with my running form. Though I did just keep wearing them with out socks off duty. The Japanese off base thought they wear boat or scuba shoes.
