The Germans were in a better position than the allies throughout the war. The Fokker scourge killed the RAF for years in uneven combat.

Had they fallen back earlier in the war and consolidated their line on the obverse side of a Belgian river, they would have bled the allies dry.

In terms of WWII, it's not. At least the first part anyways. I don't know enough about WWI to speculate. However, the Soviets relied almost entirely on lend-lease to keep their army moving. US involvement kept multiple German army groups off the Eastern Front, because the Germans and free French had no capability to do a cross channel invasion. US involvement also pulled a significant portion of the Luftwaffe off the Eastern Front in order to combat bombing raids fielding primarily American made aircraft. Had Soviets faced the full might of the German military, there is no way they could have survived.

Most of what I know about WW1 has been gleaned from watching The Great War, so I don't consider myself an expert, but:

1) Fuck up Belgium as little as possible when moving through it
2) Don't kill Edith Cavell, or any other nurses for that matter
3) Don't launch direct attacks on British civilian targets
4) Coerce Italy into joining the war at the start of it, for a two-pronged attack on France
5) Fire Hotzendorf and put literally anyone else in charge of the Austro-Hungarian army
6) If possible, send about 1/3rd of the High Seas fleet north around Britain and use all those warships for commerce raiding in conjunction with U-boats to choke off British supply lines. Guerilla warfare of the high seas, da?
7) Invest in tank development as early as possible, because tanks > trenches
8) Give officers much more command authority in the field, and focus on improving quick communications on the front line
9) Attempt to reestablish public lines of communication with the US and, if possible, cut entente communication lines and attack radio transmission stations. Keep the US public aware of the war situation, rather than letting the entente propaganda machine work its magic
10) Don't recall the zeppelin carrying supplies to Africa, those could've helped out Lettow-Vorbeck a lot, tying down even more entente troops in Africa.
11) Don't use gas until a large-scale attack like Verdun, so that France doesn't have a chance to issue gas masks and training

I'm sure there are plenty of other small or large changes that could be made in this alternate timeline, but pretty much everything hinges on being able to tell the future.

Italy had just fought and won its independence from Austo-Hungary a few decades earlier, with a lot of help from France, as well as some from Britain.

Pushing them into a war against the country that helped free them, allied with the country they fought against could've easily backfired and ensured they simply entered the war on the Entente side a year earlier.

Impossible, the strategy on both sides of the war were still set on ancient doctrines that used attrition over actual tactics.

When the first tanks rolled over the trenches the German lines started to collapse because no-one understood how to deal with mobile armor. Aircraft/Zeppelins also took both sides by surprise due to the mindset that flying machines were impossible tools for war.

When trench guns were first used the response was to declare them illegal because German leaders could not come up with any way to counter such weapons when they reached the trenches.

The entire mindset is the reason they lost, you would have to re-educate every von noble in the art of war to change the eventual course of history.

The British would have the same issues when the second world war started with things like outdated Churchill tanks and pic related. This TOG II was built because British generals thought the fight for Europe would be just like WW1, they were wrong on so many levels.

Italians at that point already had Libya from the Ottomans. They joined the Entente in hopes of gaining the Austrian Littoral, Trieste and other parts of Italia Irredentia. The fact that they don't get these places after WW1 is a major reason they join the Axis. The whole Mutailated victory thing. Its really ridiculous the French and the British didn't hold up their end of the bargain considering how little the rest of the Entente really had to spend propping up Italy.
