On the form 4473 or 4437 I forget which, it asks if you've been convicted of a crime and sentenced to a punishment including probation.

not illegal depending on the timescale and intent.
the determining factor in a straw purchase is the intent of the purchase. if you buy it as a gift, it's legal. if you buy it with the intent of circumventing a background check for someone else, it's illegal (whether said person is prohibited from owning a firearm or not). if you buy it for yourself, and later gift it to a lover or anyone else who enjoys it more than you do, that is also legal.
obviously if you have any reason to suspect that person is a prohibited person that is also illegal.
the area is a little grey because intent can be inferred or assumed by LE but the law is very clear.
if you buy it with the intent of selling it that is another grey area. it's not illegal to buy a firearm with the intention of flipping it for profit but at a certain point if it becomes a substantial part of your income or you are doing a large number of transactions you are now a dealer and the batfe expects you to be licensed to do so.
