Is a SIG P229 in .357 SIG a good all around gun for carry and home defence?

Just get .40 or 9mm. Why do you want to own a gun in a unicorn caliber?

If you need more penetration than 9mm for some reason.

Yes, I EDC a P229 in .357 SIG
I have the 9, 40, 357, and 22lr barrels. I carry and shoot .357 most often
9mm for cheap ammo
40 to make major
22lr for the children

I love my p229
But .357 sig at indoor ranges doesn't offer any advantages over .40sw or 9mm. It's also more expensive and harder to handload.

Full power .357SIG bonded gold dots from Underwood ammo does really well though barriers typically found in and around automobiles. From the shooting I've done with mine, they also deflect less penetrate more through wood compared to .40

I have a gun made in 2009. No rust forms except on the decocking lever, mag release, and slide catch even after heavy sweating in South Louisiana. If you wipe the gun before storage after carrying on a hot sweaty day, you'll be fine. I use wd-40 specialist long term corrosion protection and a paper towel on the controls before I store it.

P.S.: you can get the M11 or another version with phosphate or nickel coated controls to eliminate this problem. Midway or top gun supply also sells nickel controls for $25.
>>
>>34610058
>Full power

This meme needs to die. There is only standard pressure SAAMI spec loadings. Anything else is high pressure and likely to wear your gun prematurely.

>that DAK on the left though
awful
okay so maybe my only sig is a DAK and I'm still sad about that

It's great, but kinda big. However after wearing it for a couple weeks, you get used to it.
I go with .40, but I have a .357 barrel. Haven't ever used it through.

>>34609821
I EDC every day and work in a uninsulated hot hangar in Texas.
The gun is always covered in sweat. I just wipe the outside with some oil at the end of most days and it's good to go.

Pic was taken when it was brand new. Now, It's got alot of wear, but no corrosion.

Also,
Rails don't look sexy.

no.
>>
>>34609878
Get a .40? More like get the fuck outa here. Do you even appreciate science?
>>
>>34611871
Yes, I appreciate science and the only real advantage I can see with .357 Sig is the slightly reduced recoil impulse, although you trade that off for a louder muzzle blast.

The ballistics, as far as penetrating hard barriers goes, are basically the same within 5% when compared within the same ammo brand. If you want to try to prove me wrong, then go ahead.
>>
>>34611927 again
>are basically the same within 5%
I guess I need to be more precise here. The .40S&W projectile has more momentum by 5% with Federal Premium loadings. With other loadings, it may do better, I'm just staying within the same ammo brand to maybe keep the goalposts reasonable. The .357 Sig has less recoil, but that's subjective. It may only be as low as 5% less. Everything is a trade off.

In practical use, the price and availability are a much more significant difference.
>>
>>34609878
.357 sig is a meme right?
>>
>>34609815
Considering gun in OP is a Legion and a $1300 pistol you'd be better off getting a P226 in 9mm for home defense and a range gun or a regular p229 for carry.
>>
>>34611997
It's not like it isn't effective. But, to me, it really just seems like a special snowflake version of .40 S&W that doesn't really differentiate itself enough to be worth the extra cost.

Agreed

I have a legion 229 I 9mm, I like it so far OP. .357 seems like a neat cartridge but I don't know if it has enough advantages to warrant taking it over a 9.
>>
>>34610788
Underwood loads to 1550fps for 125 grain, everyone else downloads to 1350 fps for 125 grain.

Do some research as to which is the SAAMI spec.
>>
>>34610923
My dad bought it for $200 from a guy short on cash. (Kind of like a pawn arrangement) The guy never paid him back, and my dad died so now I get a .40 barrel and a parts gun for my main P229.

The trigger is really smooth despite being long.

yeah, but not recommended
Glocks, Tanfoglios, and 1911s definitely have spare barrels available in .40

Would a P229 be too big for a woman's hand? Apparently the grips are kind of fat

Does it even make a difference if they only shoot cheaper loads with lower pressures?

Oh shit I thought they meant the other way around. Nevermind.
