SKS stopped being produced in USSR after AKM was developed. Early on the idea was that SKS would replace Mosins and AK would replace PPSH. However, after AKM was made, together with its almost-all stamped production method, it became much cheaper("original" AK was more expensive than SKS) than SKS, therefore making it obsolete unless somebody had obsession over the slightly longer barrel(see - Chinese).

Nations that didn't develop good quality stamping methods(and USSR wasn't willing to share with them) continued to make SKS though - so you have Yugoslavian, Albanian or Chinese production rifles laying around everywhere.

It was obsolete shortly after being made but at the same time it was little over a decade, rather than just few years.
