Dogs have been in war since we invented it. Its part of why we took them in. The pack leader chooses to move in on the losing side, winners see it as favor of the wolf god or w/e. In comradery, we share the plunder as a sacrifice. They follow us home, become useful grunts and later sentinels.

I wonder how long that dog waited for it's owner. Wondering why he hasn't come back yet.

Until one day, it encounters some soldiers who are not as kind to animals and it gets shot for barking at them upon approaching it's little tent.
