The 14 inch, any day. It's more maneuverable, this is the only legitimate criticism of an HD shotgun where as capacity isn't an issue. 5 rounds of 00 buckshot is plenty enough for a home defense situation.

Are you talking about an actual 5 or 9 round capacity or 4+1 vs. 8+1? Because something you should consider is that shotguns are not like handguns. They are very often stored without a shell in the chamber (ie "cruiser safe" condition) because most do not have a firing pin block and stand a good chance of discharging if they get dropped or fall on the floor with a shell chambered.

So unless you are inserting another shell every time after you rack the slide, the real-world capacity of a 4+1 or 8+1 shotguns is usually just going to be 4 or 8.

The tldr is that a pistol grip only shotgun will do the job if you practice with it, but it is still, in all cases, a suboptimal choice that requires much more practice to achieve the same level of competency as a shotgun that actually has a stock.

Are minishells fine for hd? Recently got a few boxes of aguila buckshot minishells. It lets me fit 3 more rounds in my 14" (5+1 with normal shells, 8+1 with the minis).

The shorter length makes it easier to maneuver. The shorter barrel length also increases shot spread (which is both a positive and a negative) but the difference in most homes is negligible.
The reduced ammo capacity doesn't bother me at all. The chances of you encountering more than 2 intruders at a time are inconsequential. If you are worried that you will encounter 6, then you should effectively be as worried about encountering 10 or 23. If you are going to be targeted by a whole gang, you most likely did something to draw their attention and ire, as such, you should be reacting appropriate to that situation.

Assuming all other factors are the same, a 14.5 barrel will throw a slightly larger pattern than a 20 in barrel (you are looking at maybe a 1/4 to maybe 1/2 inch difference at 10 yards).
