It's a great shotgun, especially the 590A1, but their customer service and quality control is less than desirable and that's without Remington dickery.

Never just buy one online, inspect and purchase the one from the store you are taking home.

Quality control? I've never heard of that being a problem with Mossberg's shotguns, if anything they're less likely than other gun companies to produce lemons. Not saying their QC is perfect though. Their fit and finish overall is meh and they're loose as hell, but that's kind of the point of the gun.

I could be wrong though and things might have changed.

i had one but sold it because the 20" barrel was worthless for sporting use at my range besides slugs (new barrel cost as much as my MP18 shotgun). I replaced it with a single barrel break and i am very happy. It was a sweet piece holding 8 shots of 12 gauge but i have enough death machines. Good choice OP, try and go for the dual barrel package deal and dont worry about longdick magazine tubes they aren't as useful as they seem. What will 8 shots of buck do that 4 wont?

Well that's a 590 in your pic but I have the same thing (20" with flush mag tube) as a 500, got it for $242.

Unless you get the 590A1 the 500 and 590 are basically the same except the 590 holds one more round due to the mag tube design. The A1 has a metal safety and trigger guard and a heavier barrel.

For HD just get a 500 since it's cheaper and works just as well. Plus if you ever need to use it and it sits in an evidence locker for a year you won't be out a bunch of money.

Give you twice the capacity? Unless you're going to SBS it, there's a 1.5" difference between the 5+1 and the 7+1 Mossberg 500.

I forgot to mention the 590 can't use barrels made doesn't the 500, which are much more common and can't be found in lengths useful for hunting and clay shooting. I have a second 500 that came with an 18.5" and a 28" barrel that I use for clays.

And my point about the barrel length is the extra 1.5" is worth it to carry two extra shells loaded. Throw a side saddle on there and you have 14 shells, maybe even more if you put a stock saddle on it too.

Mossberg 500 line is best line. I have a 590 and it's great. Trying to dial in a perfect LOP for me. Currently have the 12.5" I think on it, a little too short

Top folding stock prevents me from installing most sights. what kind of front sight should I get? are there any rear sights that are flush? Or can I mount a rear sight in front of the action?

Don't get a maverick 8 you'll be happy you spent the extra money on the real mossberg.

Its made well and will last a lifetime. Ubiquitous and any accessory you can think of is available online.

Multitudes of uses from hunting large game to blasting raccoons out of the trash to home defense, to impromptu tree trimming. Can swap out the barrels in less than a minute with the loosening of a single lug.

Can even shoot tazers, sandbags, napalm, anything you want to load in a shotgun shell.

Also, fuck you Remington fags the handle is supposed to wobble because to keep it from breaking if you get shit caught inside it.

Does Mossberg make an 18.5" barrel with a matte blued finish for the 500? I can only find the ones with the regular blued finish in stores

I like their modularity. Wish they were made a bit better. Less extruded aluminum, chintzy plastic and stamped metal etc....

Also wish they offered some 20" models with rifle sights, like Remington does.

The 590 can't use barrels built for the 500 due to the design of the magazine tube and barrel. 590 barrels are less common than 500 barrels, however the 590 can use a barrel off the 835 Ulti Mag but then you end up with a Giga-Retard gun. I know this because I have a meth lab Maverick 88 with an 835/590 forward assembly that works but patterns damn weird.

I picked one up for $250 as a cheap home defense shotgun. Planning on buying and refinishing/staining a wood stock to give it a nicer look and to ditch the pistol grip.
