Storytime /k/.
You know how new privates like to spend their first paycheck on what's commonly called an "E-1 mobile"? I.E. a really expensive car they got suckered into buying at an exorbitant interest rate?
Well in our company we had someone like that. Only his love wasn't for cars, it was for guns.
>training day
>everyone getting issued their equipment for the exercise
>word was we were short exactly one 249, meaning one squad would have to go without
>"But wait!", somebody says at the last minute
>"SAW's gone, but we do have THIS!"
>mfw quartermaster straight up pulls a fucking Soviet DP-28 out of the weapons locker, had a full mag and everything
>got giddy like a fucking schoolgirl, cleared it with higher ups, checked her out
>that same day some lucky fucking specialist got to carry that bitch all throughout the exercise
>can only imagine that he WAT'd hard the whole time
Turns out some kid (who we later tracked down) had spent his first Army paycheck getting a Class III tax stamp from the ATF, and then purchasing a genuine, full-fun, DP-28 off of a private collector.
In accordance with the base's rules, he had to check it in to the armory and leave it there while he was stationed here. Only he PCS'd about a month ago and straight up forgot about/ left it there.

I like the idea of bringing your own gun to the army like some kind of militia

The true WTF moment isn't him getting the DP28, it's him just straight up leaving it.

This. I'd be upset it I misplaced a Mosin, what kind of faggot leaves a fucking LMG behind?
>bootcamp is 8-13 weeks
>NFA paperwork takes on average of 9 months to process
>Full auto LMG's like a DPM are upwards of 30k
>Paycheck upon leaving basic is typically ~5k or less
>NFA item not being in the possession of the owner
5/10. Needs work

>time past boot never stated
>signing bonus of up to 40k, depending on MOS
>anybody, let alone privates, following NFA rules to the letter

I think it's cool that the MG3, Germany's current machinegun in service, is basically just a modernized MG42. Like you can't beat that design.
